I'm guessing he has a physical AT&T SIM.

I guess the same. Also I don't want to transfer my old At&t UDP to iPad. In case of emergency I can use the SIM card in my hotspot. I heard that if you transfer At&t UDP to iPad embedded SIM you have a hotspot option, but I also heard that not everybody is so lucky.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, I don't understand you added T-mobile to embedded and later Att also to embedded ?

I never said I added ATT to embedded, I said I added my ATT SIM to the device, while T-mo is using the embedded sim just fine.. not locks

This is my setup and it works awesome!

I purchased my iPad Pro 9.7 from sprint.

In the SIM card slot I have the sprint SIM card with unlimited internet

I have tw services activated on the embedded sim both ATT and T-Mobile. I can switch between each carrier without any issues

May be an old thread but have a question...

Does this still apply to an ATT iPad pro purchased through the next program? Will it still be unlocked(external sim) even if the apple sim is locked to AT&T?

For what it's worth, the iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Gen I got back in June 2017 (maybe July? there was a shortage of 12.9 512GB so got mine later) via Next had embedded SIM locked to AT&T and physical/external SIM card slot unlocked.
