iPad Pro 9.7 new smart cover is bad, really bad

That's true - good point (lol had to just test it out myself as I usually don't fold the smart cover behind when using the iPad, or at least when I am I never reach for the volume controls). Just had a terrible thought - with volume control available in control centre, maybe it's only a matter of time before Apple removes the volume buttons? Lol.

So I've read through this thread, and tried searching myself, and can't seem to find any alternative/knockoff smart covers that aren't oversized without the silicone case. Has anyone found one anywhere? I've always preferred just a Smart Cover on my iPad, but know the excess would bug me too much to buy the Apple cover.

The overhang is really quite small as I showed in my images a page back. It isn't really that bad to be honest.

It appears as though it is only bad if the cover is flipped over, since the iPad body tapers. It doesn't look to bad when it's covering the screen

Yes but Apple made new covers for the IPP. The IPP's cover magnets are inversed compared to the Air cover. I tried one on at the store and the first flap of the cover is always "hanging" in the air. You have to purchase the IPP cover to go with the IPP.
