Yes, my ipad air 2 is a workhorse and I dont technically need a new ipad.. but would love an additional one for sanity sake.

If you absolutely need an additional one, then you'll have to choose from what's available.

Maybe a $329 iPad now to minimize the cost, and then look at upgrading the Air 2 to a new Pro later this year?

I would keep a hold of the Air 2 for just now. The Pro 9.7 is a nice upgrade but the only thing you may 'need' from it is pencil support. If you don't need this, I see no huge reason to upgrade imho other than for the sake of it because you want something new. Is there any particular reason why the Air 2 is not fulfilling your needs at the moment?

I need a second ipad and would prefer to get one with pencil support since I can use it at work.

Okay, if you have the need for the pencil then I would hold off until just before June and if nothing new is available then, just go for a current model. They are excellent devices. You also have 30 days to return it to Apple if something new is released soon after your purchase.

Hey guys. Want to know should I go for the newest iPad or iPad Pro 9.7. I have seen numerous comparisons on websites. And it all confuses me more. I just want to replace my laptop. Can anyone help me decide. . I know it's not the right place to ask. Please don't feel offended. Thanks

The new iPad released yesterday is down right horrible (IMO). Its a downgrade from the Air 2. Its slightly faster and brighter, but heavier, thicker, not a fully laminated display.

I wouldn't call it downright horrible, because it is faster than the iPad Air 2, but is only $329 for the 32GB version. That's fairly cheap for an iPad that is sufficiently fast for 99.9% of the things you might want to do with one.

Being slim and light costs money; they wouldn't be able to meet the $329 price point if it looked the same as the Air 2.

If it cost $499 than I would agree about it being horrible. I'm glad more people can buy iPads, and I can now justify upgrading my iPad Air.

The fact that they are calling this the replacement to the Air 2 is why its horrible. Its so misleading. Its a downgrade. Multi-core is faster on the Air 2 because of the tri-core processor. So unless you are only reading and browsing the web, the Air 2 will probably outperform in games and video/photo editing.

This might be the case, but keep in mind the $329 price point. It's like saying a Ford Fiesta is a horrible car without taking into account the fact that it's really affordable.

We shall see; it's not even out yet. I'm looking forward to benchmarks and reviews. Either way, a decently performing iPad was needed at a more affordable price point. This is it.

Im not disagreeing with the price, but I'm disagreeing with Apple's tactic. They 'cheapened' up the product to reduce to the price point to get more people to buy products. But at the same time, they are pushing people towards to Pro line to spend more money because the features are vastly improved for $170 more. It just feels shady and wrong to me.

By all means, if you don't need anything fancy, than its a great product for a great price, especially even compared to the Mini 4, but to call it an 'upgraded' model over the Air 2 is just wrong. Its a downgrade in every aspect except brightness and single-core speed.

I'm not saying cheap is bad, I'm saying that what Apple is 'playing' here is bad.

I understand what you're saying, and don't necessarily disagree, but I have to say, it is funny that people complain about Apple products being overpriced, and now that they've released a pretty affordable and decently spec'd iPad that we are complaining that it's too cheap.

I think it would have been cool along with this release to bring the iPad Pro 9.7" down to the 499 mark. There's already so much upsell on that model already (I imagine most end up paying for the pencil, keyboard, more storage, etc). Actually, thinking about it now, I bet once new generation of Pros are released that the existing 9.7 will hang around and drop to fill the gap between 329 and 599.

In that case I agree with Donka. Wait as long as possible until the trip, and if nothing is released then grab the current Pro with the Pencil.
