Hi Guys

Looking at upgrading my current Ipad 2 to an Ipad Pro, since upgrading to ios 8 on my ipad 2 has been basically rendered useless, but until this time I have had no need for an Ipad.

My only concern with buying the current Ipad is the 2gb of ram, could anybody who actively uses their Ipad pro give some insight on if they encounter any limitations with the ram? Browsers and apps refreshing?

I have a feeling that if I wait until March the next generation Ipad pro 9.7 would come with 4GB which may future proof, 2-3 years over the current Ipad.

people disagree when i say the ipad pro 9.7 has some kind of hardware issue causing the springboard crash, but I'm convinced the lack of ram is causing it because the big ipad pro doesnt have the issue

If the Pro 9.7 gets refreshed in 2017, it will still have 2gb.

The belief is 2017, Apple will unveil a 10.5" version - that one may have 3gb ram.

Only Pro 12.9" will have 4gb ram.

Take it or leave it.

not entirely sure if its ram amount in that case, since there are iOS 9 devices with the same or lower amounts of ram that don't seem to springboard crash as frequently as the 9.7 pro. that said, it might be that they've switched to a faultier ram supplier for the 9.7 pro?

also, to the OP, i get the feeling that most will argue that the 9.7 pro runs just fine with 2gb. the biggest concern for me is how its going to run iOS 11 (iOS 10 will probably be fine enough too, as the first update usually is). unless there is a mini refresh this fall, i'm betting the 9.7 pro will be the last iPad to ship with 2gb, and potentially after the iPhone 7, the second last iOS device in general to ship with it.

Seriously, absolutely no one knows what will Apple give as far as memory in the new updates, no one.

I never said my post was fact.

Those of you holding out for a 4gb 9.7"...when that happens, the 12.9 will be 6-8gb.

Apple will -never- release a 9.7" version with 4gb at the same time as the 12.9" 4gb.

The 12.9 will always be the king-of-the-hill in the RAM dept.

I think people forget that the higher resolution screens need more RAM just to function the same as lower resolution screens. This is why I heard more people having issues with apps closing frequently in the background on the iPhone 6 Plus than the iPhone 6, and partly why the iPhone 7 Plus probably has an additional GB of RAM over the iPhone 7.

I could say the 9.7" iPad Pro is not 12.9" so your comment isn't relevant.

You're convinced the smaller iPad Pro crashes because it has less RAM. I countered that the iPad Air 2 has the same amount of RAM and doesn't crash.

Please explain how that isn't relevant.
the ipad pro big and small have the same architecture, just different sizes, the ipad air 2 uses a different one and is not the same generation of technology (A8x v A9X, ddr3 ram vs ddr4).

saying the ipad air 2 has 2 gigs of ram adds nothing to the discussion, might as well say 2 gig chromebooks are related by your line of thinking

That has much to do with it.

Bottom-line, the 9.7" and the rumored 10.5" iPad will always have less ram than the 12.9".

People have to get the notion out to their heads that the lesser models will ever be on equal footing when it comes to RAM.

The 10.5" may support usb3, but it will never have the same ram as it's bigger brother.

I do run into scenarios where my 9.7” iPad Pro will randomly restart by itself once in a while. It's highly reminiscent of the old iOS 7 random reboots, but I have never figured out what the problem is.

Otherwise, the iPad has been very smooth and speedy in its performance.

First bold one. Sounds like fact from you to me and everyone else.

Second old one. This one does not sound like fact

Honestly, the A8X vs A9X and DDR3 vs DDR4 shouldn't make much difference for out of memory crashes. 32-bit vs 64-bit (e.g. iPad 4 vs Air), sure. Faster CPU and RAM? Not really.

Mind, can't say I've experienced a lot of those springboard crashes on my Pro 9.7. I wasn't even aware that was an issue.

You originally said the lack of RAM is why 9.7" iPad Pro crashes. Now you're throwing architecture and different generation technology in there.

You're all over the place with your argument.

The idea of future-proofing an iPad......Apple engineers don't think that way and the products aren't spec'd that way.

Those of you who are holding out for a 'future-proof 9.7" ' are chasing a will-o-wisp.

i said it was hardware, probably ram since thats the major difference between the big and small besides usb 3.0 which i doubt would be causing the issue. fact of the matter is that the small one crashes, where the big one doesn't. no amount of apple apologist will change that

You clearly said:

the lack of ram is causing it

I won't argue that it's not some other type of hardware issue because it very well could be. I just don't believe it's a lack of RAM when the iPad Air 2 has the same amount of RAM but doesn't have that issue.

nice try, learn to quote, out of context doesn't count. you're one of those people by the way.

I have both the 9.7" and 12.9" Pro. Honestly, I can't tell the difference in speed between the two. Both are very speedy for what I do with them. I do some video editing, but have yet to edit (or shoot) 4K yet - that's he only thing I can think of that might be different (experience of editing HD video is the same).

The only problem I am having with the 9.7" iPad Pro - I should have gone with the 256GB instead of the 128GB - otherwise it's been nothing but smooth sailing WITH THE EXCEPTION of Apple's on-going failure to make the iWork suite compatible across the OS and iOS platforms.

Out of context? You just said it again. LMAO

It's not the lack of RAM. The type of RAM, maybe. Some other hardware, maybe. Bad software, maybe. Lack of RAM, no.

why are you even in this discussion, you don't have an ipad pro. It seems like your posts here are more about trolling and telling people how much you love your ipad air 2.

And it's clear you fail to understand the nuanced differences between the ipad pro and the ipad air 2.
