Thanks for all the replies, its been an interested read.

I can certainly appreciate that a piece of technology is never going to be future proof but since I upgrade every 3-4 years I'd like to see it last me that long. Perhaps in the future I should be more apprehensive updating to the latest IOS version.

I'm going to take the plunge and hopefully in 3 years time the ipad pro will still run the latest IOS to a useable standard.

people disagree when i say the ipad pro 9.7 has some kind of hardware issue causing the springboard crash, but I'm convinced the lack of ram is causing it because the big ipad pro doesnt have the issue
I never had a springboard crash on my iPad pro 9.7...the baconreader app crashed once on both my smaller and larger pro but that was a bug in the app obviously....

Would support the theory that it's a batch of dodgy hardware vs something intrinsic to the specs of the device. I don't have a lot of apps installed nor do I keep a ton of safari tabs open, but it happens quite frequently when opening or switching to an app, first party and third party.

If ios10 doesn't address it I might see if I can swap under AppleCare.

Out of curiosity when did you buy yours? I'm one of the ones who got it right at launch.

Seriously, 9.7 Ipad Pro has 2GB of RAM ,and it is crashing and lagging? So, why my Air 2 is not lagging, while it has the same 2gb of ram? That is why I Always reccomend to buy 2 gen products. Look to Ipad Air 1 , it is lagging everywhere, so as 9.7 Ipad Pro. But, dont worry , Ipad Pro 2 will fix all issues that the first Ipad Pro have

9.7 Ipad Pro = Ipad Air 1=Ipad 3

I own an iPad Air 2 and have experienced enough refreshing tabs and apps on it to say that the 2 GB RAM is just a little bit short. No crashes though but it's especially obvious in Safari or Chrome when you have a tab where nothing has changed and the whole page reloads when you switch to that tab. By comparison on my Android phone with 3 GB I don't seem to run into similar issues.

I don't like Apple's deliberate skimping on both RAM and storage space. At least storage space you can upgrade for a hefty fee. I would not be surprised at all if the next iPad Pro contains at least 3 GB.

i'm not a heavy tab user, so i can get by with the current performance for my needs. (personal opinion, of course)

what bugs me is that apple pushes you to update very aggressively, and the updates tend to be extra punishing on devices designed to only just scrape by from the get go. so what starts out as an odd tab refresh becomes a 2 second delay in every typed character after a few OS upgrades. and then you feel like you need to get newer hardware, not because your needs have grown, but because the base performance of the device has degraded.

i KNOW there are people who insist the "slight" degradation is no big deal and worth it for the new features/security, but thats a trade off that comes down to individual preference. honestly i just want a device that behaves like the one i bought for more than a year or two. entice me with new features that my current hardware could never do, not by making my device drag and i need to replace it just to type without massive lag.

Cmon man, everyone knows iPad Pro 9.7 is an iPad Air 3, it is by no means a first gen product. I have absolutely no issues on iOS 10 on my Pro.

I'd say that my Air 1 runs better on iOS 10 than it did on iOS 9. I have an Air 2 as well. Apart from Safari tabs reloading the difference is minimal.

could you check the error log? after the crash, check the error log and see what was causing it.

My error log is FILLED (literally over 100) with "jetsam events" error 298. All in the last week. There some serious bugging out going on with the iPad Pro 9.7.

My iPad Air 2 doesn't have that issue either and it has 2GB of RAM.

I've been looking for someone to confirm this. I witnessed the soft reboot in an Apple store, on the 9.7" iPad Pro. I decided to buy the iPad Air 2 because of the reboot, but have been concerned that it was a RAM issue.

I have found devices on display on the Apple store floor to be a mess. So many people screwing with them does not make a great experience.

I've owned two different iPad Air 2's since the beginning of last year and have seen SpringBoard crash maybe once or twice between both of them (not including the few times it crashed on the third iOS 10 public beta) so I would definitely call it a non-issue on the iPad Air 2.

I usually reboot the device before I start my testing. One thing that was apparent, it only had the problem when it was under load, and by under heavy load (many open apps).

My Pro 9.7 is performing so good since I bought it. I am on iOS 10, and still didn't encounter a single problem. I didn't ever feel that 2GB is holding me back.

Hi Guys

Looking at upgrading my current Ipad 2 to an Ipad Pro, since upgrading to ios 8 on my ipad 2 has been basically rendered useless, but until this time I have had no need for an Ipad.

My only concern with buying the current Ipad is the 2gb of ram, could anybody who actively uses their Ipad pro give some insight on if they encounter any limitations with the ram? Browsers and apps refreshing?

I have a feeling that if I wait until March the next generation Ipad pro 9.7 would come with 4GB which may future proof, 2-3 years over the current Ipad.

I've used a 9.7" iPad Pro since shortly after launch, and have now moved back to the 12.9" model.

Never ran into a RAM issue on the 9.7". Sure, it's only 2GB, but it's also a mobile device, running a mobile OS. Nice and speedy on iOS 10, and an overall great device. I simply wanted a bigger screen for drawing, photo editing, and content viewing. If any of those are important to you, I'd go with the 12.9", as it's really much more of a computer replacement.

the ipad pro big and small have the same architecture, just different sizes, the ipad air 2 uses a different one and is not the same generation of technology (A8x v A9X, ddr3 ram vs ddr4).

saying the ipad air 2 has 2 gigs of ram adds nothing to the discussion, might as well say 2 gig chromebooks are related by your line of thinking
This is not how computers work at all. Please stop.

In other news, no, there's no RAM issue on the 9.7" iPad Pro. iOS handles RAM very well.

this is the equivalent of plugging your ears and screaming "la la la i can't hear you, the ipad is perfect"

why dont you offer something to the discussion or a counterpoint, mr computer science

2Gb iPhone 7 vs 4Gb Samsung Note 7

Despite repeated crowing about the "superior multitasking" on offer the Samsung has to reload apps more than the iPhone with half the RAM. In other words

iOS handles RAM very well.
