😬
Now that I am currently eyeing an iPad Pro, it quite feels like I have to go back about everything I said...
To be fair. The Micro Panel didn't work on the iPad Pro when it was released. Only when DaVinci Resolve 19 was available later.

I planned to use it with video shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max that I purchased for recording in ProRes LOG.
And I ended up with purchasing a used Canon C300 Mark II as well, for even better video quality.

I started this post so people who purchased an iPhone 15 Pro will know that they can colour grade video recorded in Apple ProRes Log.

The new Micro Panel is much cheaper ($509), than the old one. And it can just as easily be used with a mac, on macOS.
It is not limited to the iPad. The iPad Pro 12.9" M-series have a better screen than the iMac and the Studio Display, for colouring. And it also capable of showing HDR content. And I believe several of the MacBook versions also has great displays. I just never read about those.

I thought this was great news for amateur video creators. And never expected it to turn into a discussion about professional needs.

To be honest, I’m no pro or videographer, but to me if your an amateur using your iPhone to make videos, many do, and want to expand that hobby possibly into a profession then at that price this is a pretty good way of doing it.

As a professional Colourist for 30 years I’ll give my two cents…

The new micro panel is a hundred times better than the old one… nicer buttons and the wheels and balls are very nice to use. Would I use it with my IPP… not for anything serious, but I have used Resolve on the IPP to very quickly do some proof of concept / testing type work… so for that reason alone its a good thing for me to have access to…

If I was in the market for a Resolve Mini Panel I would hold fire on that as it’s entirely possible BMD might roll the micro form factor and design into a new Mini panel which would be great as I don’t like the form factor of the current Mini panel at all… Heck you might even see BMD overhaul the current Advanced panel with some of he design tech seen here in the Micro… now that would be very interesting as that panel is very old…

but back to the Micro panel… it’s a good thing for any budding colourist there is NO substitute for grading on wheels and balls with two hands… It’s how colour grading was developed and it’s a fundamental of colour correction… grading is tactile, you need two hands interacting, a mouse on its own does not cut it… The wheels and balls interface is critical to grading and at this price point you’d be daft to not want to give it a whirl…

good luck.
