My one gripe about reading comics on the iPad, no matter what size is double page spreads. For this I will always prefer the physical copy. Double page spreads get shrunk down to fit horizontally, and I have to start the whole stretching thing with each panel to read dialogue. This really hit home with the first issue of Undiscovered Country that came out. Since I wasn't at the store at 9:59am when the store opens at 10, the vultures speculators got all the copies before I could get one to read. 🤬 🤬 🤬 So I bought it digitally, and a large part of the middle of the story is double page spreads. It just takes you out of the reading experience when you have to reorient your reading position, then start stretching & switching to read panels.

Just a personal gripe.

I'd also recommend if you get a regular place to work on your iPad to draw, to look at this stand.

Not my image, but from another artist on Twitter who just discovered the stand as well.

Very steady & strong to put your iPad in a more comfortable position for longer sessions of drawing. I saw it recommended in a top iPad pro accessories video, and it's been picking up more & more recommendations since. I like mine. Pain to adjust, but that means it won't fold under pressure from you drawing on it.
Oooooooo! I need one of those! :D

Ooh wow that does look nice, thanks! Normally I work with it on my lap but that would be great for when I’m at the desk. Awesome!

i see what you mean about double page spreads, that’d lead to a lot of iPad rotating. I hadn’t really thought of that as they don’t turn up frequently in the Comics I have.

This is what I am talking about. The first issue of Undiscovered had a bunch of double page spreads, busy with dialogue. Great in a physical comic, to me personally not so great on the iPad flow wise. Then again, comics aren't designed with tablets in mind, so that's understandable.

Now, when I read books on the Comixology website on a 27" monitor, it's a dream. :p

I see what you mean. I’d have to make do with the tinier text in landscape. Usually doable though. 🙂 I use comixology and chunky comic reader.. When I’m in comixology on those double page spreads (if/when I don’t want to rotate) i guess I do the double tap speech bubble/panel following view thing. It usually does a nice job of following the dialogue then panning out to show the whole scene or leading with the whole scene before drilling into the dialogue. Have to use that all the time when reading on phone.. Not ideal but still nice.

I decreasingly like reading anything on my computer, as I’m not usually at it.. Going to my iMac basically quarenteens me from family etc so the iPads been great for stopping me disappearing to another floor of the house. 😅

For me, the stand is pretty difficult to adjust, which is what I want.

Think of this stand as part of your studio, not a portable one, but your regular desk setup if you go iPad main. Earlier vids of it I found are people using it for their Surface Pros, so any iPad shouldn't be an issue. This stand WILL support you drawing on it. It can with a little bit of effort break down flat, and be on the go with you. I broke it down and took it with me to New York Comic Con, and you can make a nice little office in your hotel room. Mainly though it stays in a regular position that I prefer for drawing, and I leave it at that.

I don't remember the YouTube vid that I saw that convinced me to try it. I did find this video from Ergojosh who also got the stand after I saw it. He has an entire setup in the vid so you can get an idea of what i am referring to. It's a long video where he talks while sketching, which is his thing, but you can see it within the first 3 minutes.

When I want complete portability & not worried about positioning I go with this.

Later on, I will try to post a pic of my setup with it. It's very simple.

The only “problem” I’ve had with it is around the edge of the screen, clearly to avoid accidental presses because of the tiny bezel, thumb presses sometimes don’t register, which isn’t ideal as most art apps UI/Toolbars are on the very edge of the screen, so I’ve learned to double-tap tools now. Not every app has this problem so I guess there’s a way for developers to bypass the touch rejection. Pencil taps always register, its just finger presses.
This (and my preference for Touch ID) is the exact reason I upgraded to second gen 12.9 iPad Pro instead of third gen. The second gen has been pretty much the ideal iPad for me (for drawing)—EXCEPT the stupid touch disease issue which makes me want to break it over my knee sometimes. Hope you don’t get that issue on your iPad. But glad you’re enjoying your iPad overall.

Thanks :D I dont notice the edge thing anymore, it was just a little odd to get used to. :) I thought I'd prefer touchid too but i dont miss it at all now it's not there, it's even.. slightly more convenient this way? (though not by much, either is fine!) I keep hearing of the dreaded touch disease but have never seen it in person. I really hope mine continues to behave itself!

Unfortunately it takes awhile before one finds out. Mine didn’t start misbehaving until about 6 months in. But yes, hopefully you got a good one.
Regarding the edge thing, do you mean your thumb presses register now? Did you find a certain way to press the buttons on the edge?

My thumb presses register at the edge of the screen if I either double tap or hold them down for a little differently.. or something. It’s really hard to tell what I’m doing differently as I adjusted and can’t really get it to happen anymore. It feels natural now. 🙂
