There is a reason there are such conflicting reports of blooming and it’s because the local dimming is only working for certain apps. And the local dimming does not work for menu overlays which is why you get blooming from that. It is the exact same way on my Sony Z9D TV which has 800 dimming zones. The menu system overlay shows horrible blooming but while viewing actual content, it looks incredible.

If the local dimming was really that bad on this mini-led then there would be horrendous blooming while viewing HDR content, which simply isn’t the case. Try a show like Altered Carbon on Netflix which has really bright highlights. It looks amazing on this display with negligible blooming. If it’s even possible to get the local dimming engaged with certain apps where it’s not working, I’m sure it will be figured out and updated.
Exactly. Plus blooming is normal. My $2000 Sony top of the line tv has blooming too. It’s a trade off for mini-LED.

I wrote in summer to Apple Feedback about how the mini led is turning on more zones than it should (when you use the mouse for example, you can see in a dark room that it turns on more zones than it should using dark mode) and 2 weeks ago the asked me if it was solved in the latest beta and if not to send a device diagnostic. Same with the latest beta, perhaps they are trying to change how the algorithm works and improve a little the backlight

That would be good. It definitely is bizarre how much it turns on around objects instead of just under the objects.

Last time I noticed b-b-b-bloomin’™ was testing the iPad at worst conditions as this thread was made. Yes, of course, the miniLED local dimming zones exist. And the Earth is round. This thread should be unpinned.

This thread certainly will stay.
Blooming is real and rather apparent on my device.
It might vary from device by device, varies from users perception and use scenarios but it's there on mine and it's a fact for me and many others.
If yours perfect and you can't see it,great.

It is real. LCD greys are real too, yet there’s no stickied thread to it. I’ve yet to see XDR to XDR blooming comparison. I believe it’s only eyes that make the difference.

Would rather see it pinned than 40 different threads about it :)

I actually couldn’t believe how gray my last iPad Pro was until I put them side to side. Blooming is absolutely better than a black background that’s actually bright gray!

That's good to hear Apple is looking to improve it. Do you have the latest beta then and have tested it?

I know this is about the iPad, but does anyone notice a little blooming on the iPhone as well?

since the M2 IPP has the same screen, I'm assuming the blooming issue will persist in the new M2 iPad Pro?

I’m sure this is just me, but the blooming seems worse on the new M2 iPad Pro, lol

Anyone has both can comment on whether blooming is improved? (I guess I can also go buy one test it and return it...)

The blooming won't be so much of an issue if Apple allow you to disable the dimming zones.

There are many laptops and desktop displays that allow you to turn off the dimming zones.

even when people had a tremendous display they still are un-happy since they should know that perfection doesnt exist in anything
Maybe micro-led but that tech will also has some minor issues
For ProRes/proRaw users this is a significant update, for the casual users is very minor but those are fine with the ipad air too

Yeah, most people using the screen will very rarely be looking at a black screen with white text at VERY low brightness (the most common would would be the Books app). The dynamic range available when viewing webpages, images, videos is more than worth the trade off.

That would be a good idea. It can be pretty annoying in content (older movies and stuff like that), that wasn't optimized for a display like that. It would look much better in these cases with the LEDs always running at their lowest brightness

I am looking at my 12.9 iPad 2021, playing U2 360 concert - gorgeous. I don't see blooming, and that's what maters. I don't care if it blooms a little in text edit or serttings.

Why is there no thread with the regular 11” having blooming across the entire screen?

With IPS display, all blacks across the entire display is blooming basically.
