So, anyone can confirm that they can use the iPad w/the latest software on higher brightness without the left part noticeably heating up? I have a genius appt in a couple of hours and don’t want to swap out if this is a software issue.

Thanks

Mine also heat up on full brightness (>80%) where the display driver are. And this is like from the first day. But I nearly never use it on this high of brightness.

3rd gen Pro 12.9

Every screen produces heat at higher brightness, so that’s normal. People having touch issues are wrongly connecting the two behaviors (unless, who knows, their devices really do have some heat-related issues and become way more warm than they should. But some warmth at high brightness is normal).

Mine gets a bit warm on the left side when at max brightness, and has been since day one, but I have no touch issues.

Btw, iPads have been getting warm on the left side, especially at max brightness, for a long time. Here is a post from 2012:

Thanks for referencing that post. It’s crazy to see it’s been happening for a while, but makes sense as they probably have not moved the placement of the brightness controller since the original. My concerns is that it gets warm in not just max brightness, but really between 50-100. Obv it’s much warmer under max though. Even if it’s not hot to touch, when comparing to the right side, the right side is always cold if that makes sense. It’s just annoying as I’m using the device and notice it when holding in portrait.

I work near an apple store, and will prob stop by tomorrow to see if I can reproduce this with the display units.

Yeah, I mean, I’m sensitive to warmth and have been noticing it on iPhones and iPads since my first iOS devices. It was, actually, quite a bit worse in the old days :)

Every screen produces heat, especially bright ones. This is why Apple has these massive heat sinks on their 6K Pro Display XDR. This is (among reasons) why thin OLED TVs have ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiters). And this is why devices, especially thin ones, can get warm just from the screen itself.

The new iPad Pros can go up to 600nits which is, like, really bright. AND they are super-thin. No wonder they get warm even just from light usage at higher brightness (yes, even at 50%).

If your device is working normally otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it. Gadgets get warm. And if you do have issues they might not be heat-related anyway.

I’m wondering if anyone following this thread has the new ios13 public beta installed. If the left side heat is indeed software related, I’m wondering if it still gets very warm on that side with the new software.

I’m using the beta(db1,2) and the heat is exactly the same as before.

It’s not software related, as I explained above. Is your iPad just getting warm, or is it hot like, I don’t know, a freshly made Pizza? If it’s just warm, but not to the point you don’t want to hold it in your hand - this is normal behavior.

I politely disagree as the left side is where all of my iPad Pros, the 2019 Mini and the 2018 iPad have become too hot before touch disease starts afterward.

Every iPad gets got on the left side. Every. iPad.

Now, maybe yours get too hot, like, really, really hot - but every iPad gets warm on the left side when the screen is on, especially at higher brightness.

Yes, really, really hot. I’ve always kept my brightness less than 50% on any iPad including both 2017 iPPs, the 2019 Mini and 2018 iPad and all of them got really, really hot.

The Mini was ridiculous hot when I was downloading a bunch of movies from iTunes. A day later, touch disease. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. The only two iPads I’ve owned that did not exhibit touch disease within a day of such heat were the 2017 iPP 12.9 and the 2018 iPad, but they eventually did -and in the case of the 2018 iPad- it still does every so often.

So, yeah, this has to be addressed. Procreate cannot figure out why users in their forum are reporting irresponsiveness (None of their fixes work), but 98% of my experience has resulted in my iPads (except the Mini) getting that hot while using Procreate.

Hey all,

I recently had my 11” pro swapped out by apple and noticed that the left side glass along the border tends to get warmer than the rest of the device with use. It’s pretty noticeable and don't think it was happening with my 6 month old one. Anyone else experience this?

Experienced exactly that behaviour with my 11" Pro

- 4G on (good signal)
- on a Spanish network.
- whatever activity

No heat on any other network with same activities yet. No heat with 4G off in Spain.

Sound silly, but it really just was "4G on in Spain"

Mine is WiFi. It maybe that the 4g network uses more processing.

I have recently seen this issue with Procreate on my 1TB iPad Pro 12.9". Mine was getting almost too hot to touch - the long side opposite the volume buttons. I do see that it is a lot warmer than my 2015 12.9" - they are sitting side by side and on for the same time. 2015 has Goodnotes5 displayed and 2018 mail program. I did check how many apps open on my 2018 (I lost count - but a LOT). I will see how it does with almost everything closed.

Good luck.

I have generally Procreate open with Photos in split screen (side by side) unless I am not drawing from photo reference.

Freaky - I literally just came to the forums to look up this issue. I am experiencing right now for the first time, and this is the newest thread I came to! Had my iPad swapped about 2-3 weeks ago.

Hello everyone. I had the exactly same issue with my Pro 10.5. It also had been reported for other devices and in other forums. This is not a simple software issue.

Bought my Pro in January 2020 (still sealed). It was fine until March. Then there had been a single, but major crash/freeze, probably the moment when the damaged hardware component failed for the first time. As soon I somehow managed to reset it after some minutes, the massive heat issue began. How you can confirm it:

  1. Lower left area next to homebutton heats up after 4-5min whenever the display is on. Brightness doesn't play a major influence and as you turn the display off (background activity like music/radio can continue), it will cool down again.
  2. Dramatic battery drain, like if the defective component/chip drains Amperes like crazy. You can really watch 1-2% dropping every 3mins, even in absolute idle
  3. Neither a soft nor hard reset, nor software update does solve the issue

Only solution: If you still have warranty, use it! Dont waste your time like me with the lousy telephone or chat 'support', hell, even the pick-up service was pathetic, as they just sent it back to me a week later later with "no issues noticed". Guess what, still got hot. Either go to your local Apple Store or Gravis (like I did) and demonstrate the issue. Reset you device before doing that so they see it even runs hot after a few minutes in the 'welcome / select your country' screen. It is crucial that a staff member or supervisor sees and confirms the symptoms.

--> About three days later, I could pick up a new / refurbished unit (0 cycle counts) from my Gravis which is fine again. No heat, good battery. I strongly assume a defective display controller chip. Don't ask me how that happens, as I handle my devices very gently. Good luck everyone!

I don't know if it is normal for ipad pro 10.5

It cant be normal, if the heat and battery drain is really strong without any significant activity.
My replacement is cool again, battery drain also fine, so the best is to compare two identical units.

In the Apple store, the devices are running all the time with cranked up brightness. So they definitely are getting warm. Which makes things more tricky of course.

my battery is okay, I can do 10 hours of screen on.
what worried me was that only left side of ipad heating up (not hot, warm), but also the ipad in apple store is warm only on left side.

If its just warm (not hot, like it becomes really uncomfortable to touch with your hand) and you get about 10hrs battery life there is no reason to be worried :)

Mine too. I’ve had this 12.9” 1st gen iPad Pro Since it first came out. But I’ve only been getting this ‘left side heat’ and dreadful battery life thing since 13.4. The current 13.5 update hasn’t fixed it

It looks like PerfPowerServicesSignpostReader (some OS process) has gone nuts - and is stuck consuming virtually 100% CPU. I'll try rebooting - and if that doesn't help I'll try rebuilding this iPad from scratch.

In the meantime, if anyone else that has these heating problems also has Xcode, have a look in Instruments. Do you have any rogue processes?
