I'll gladly sacrifice a little battery life for better picture quality. It's amazing how many people are blinded by OLED marketing and don't understand the many disadvantages it comes with. Near black performance and motion are much better on LED. And with 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 2500 dimming zones, the advantage of individual pixel control is negligible. Anyone trying to equate this new mini-LED screen to any previous LCD screen simply has no idea what they're talking about. The blacks on this will be perceptually as black as OLED in a dark room.
It sounds like if anyone has been taken in by marketing, it’s you.

No, I have seen all of these different display techs. Most here are basing their opinion on how bad the black levels are with the IPS panels Apple has used in every previous iPad. This is an entirely different kind of panel, it's not even in the same ballpark as far as black-levels.

You’re not getting an OLED. Apple wouldn’t invest into Mini LED for just one generation, and in many ways, it’s better for this kind of device (iPad, Mac, etc.) With this high contrast ratio and 1600 nit peak brightness, it’s obvious this is their answer to OLED tablets and laptops. I expect it to look amazing, get near OLED levels of contrast, higher peak brightness and no burn in when using static elements like UI.

This is very advanced, modern screen tech. I wouldn’t dismiss it before seeing it.

I am looking forward to trying out that 12.9” then! It seems they did give the 12.9 2021 a bigger battery versus the 2020, I guess it’s to handle this display while keeping battery life the same.

no oled for next year, at least for the bigger ipad pro...apple will not develop a new display tech just for 1 gen
And they will keep the mini-led until micro-led is a thing for smaller displays
But i can see Apple adopt oled for ipad air...maybe
But for macbook pro and ipad pro will remain at mini-led until micro-led...so for next 3-4 years at least

agree...the oled remain on top with just black level being 0 since the pixel doesnt li..but the rest...i think mini-led is better for pro creating...blue pixels will not shift away so soon...contrast and peak brightness etc...i have tab s7+ with amoled and it has i think around 450-500nits max

The next M gen we will see in the next mac line-up that will be released in the second half of 2021
The bigger imac and macbook pro, and probably a new mac mini also
Until late 2022 i dont think the ipad pro will get any new hardware change, this 2021 model is a powerhouse that can stay for 18-24 months easy

I think THINK Mini-led is better than OLED, reasons:

- No burn-in problems. (In phones this doesn't really matter, but in iPad there might be some elements static for hours. Also in Mac)

-No Yellow tint problem. (11 Pro and 12 Pro suffers from this. My 11 pro max "true-tone" is unusable)

- It's very hard to get even color uniformity in OLED. Its organic material so the pixels and brightness will fade overtime. (According to my information)

-More brightness. (When you increase the brightness in OLED the risk for burn-in also increases.)

Possible problems with mini-led:

-Expensive because new tech. (Not a problem to Apple accordingly)

-If you look for it, (Put a black wallpaper and move the cursour around) you can see the "ghosting". But to me, this is a tradeoff i can make vs. oled.

This drives me absolutely nuts for content consumption.

The workaround is to increase ambient lighting in the room.

Mini-LED is more like a stopgap in between LCD and OLED. OLED allows for true blacks by turning off individual pixels. It also helps to save a lot of battery life when using dark mode. Mini-LED cannot do that.
Yeah we have to wait for Micro LED for that. After that, I see no advantage in OLED. Don't organic displays decay faster too?

Not sure why there's this myth that OLED is some uber expensive tech.

$399 Lenovo Tab P11 Pro has a 11.5" OLED. Same PPI as iPad Air.

It's time to change your perspective. Mini LED slots above OLED.
My Galaxy Tab S5e has OLED. Gello effect when scrolling vertically, dirty screen effect. Looks good when lit though... But I hate the Tab. Super slow from the beginning. It was cheap (500 USD), but already lost half its value. I didn't get iPhone 12 to avoid OLED, I'd hate to be disappointed at that price.
