The stuttering issue with the 2018 12.9 inch Pro is becoming more common now as I have been monitoring the thread on the Apple support pages. Some people with older models have also had the issue happen to them too.

For context, My iPad was working perfectly until suddenly in Procreate it began to stutter. From then on, every day, my iPad would start to stutter, not respond to my touch and just freeze for a few seconds. I downloaded many apps to try and clear memory, as well as clearing the RAM but the issue persisted. The most common place it would stutter was between Safari and the News app.

Finally, I worked out that when the Pencil was attached, it would be fine, but once the Pencil was detatched, the stuttering would start. So I deactivated Bluetooth and unpaired the Pencil each time but it was happening, thinking that the iPad might be registering erroneous pencil input. It didn’t fix the issue and even when I’d try to write with the pencil during the stutter, the strokes wouldn’t register. Finally it was too much and mostly on one side (the right) and in portrait mode, so I took it to the Genius Bar.

The lady who served me was so condescending. Luckily I had Apple Care but very luckily, I had recorded a video on my iPhone of the screen being unresponsive as there could be every chance that I wasn’t able to replicate the issue in front of her. She was telling me it looked like I was using more than one finger at once (WTF), was asking me if I did the force reset, even asking me to show her how I would restart my iPad. I told her I had done everything from erasing all content and settings, to setting the iPad up as new etc. She was giving me options like ‘we could have it checked. There is a chance you could get a new one, but it might be an issue with something you’re doing’. Finally as she was randomly scrolling through it, the stuttering happened to her and no matter what she did, the iPad was unresponsive. It was only then that she actually believed me and ordered me a new unit. She seemed annoyed that she had gone hard on me as if it were my fault so I took every bit of pleasure in the world seeing her fall flat on her face, as well as bringing to her attention the countless people going through the same thing. Unacceptable for a $2000 device! The new one was restored from back-up and so far, so good. No amount of apps open, or web pages can cause it to stutter.

This is happening to so many people now - I think Apple needs to realise that it’s an issue and fix it seeing as though this thing costs more than a MacBook Air.

Sheesh. I am sorry you had that kind of treatment. Glad you received g a new unit and that you were able to prove it.

If this were me, I’d politely email Tim Cook with the details above (removing any mention of condescending etc. - not wimping out here), but if you’re nice and detailed in what happened (very smart to record video on your iPhone btw), you may get a response.

Apple needs to know their build quality AND customer service is sorely lacking lately.

I let Tim and Angela know when 3 attempts to buy iPhones at a specific Apple store went horribly awry due to Apple specialists not being so special and rude to boot. They had the store leader contact me and make things right.

It is very disappointing that iPad Pros show up with touch issues with every gen now. Thanks for posting this.

Good luck with the replacement!

Stuttering sounds like either the Display digitizer delaminates from the glass or the thin ribbon cable is bad
OR the CPU separates from the heat spreader causing throttling.

Even if the issue is only when the Pencil is initially disconnected? That’s when it becomes the biggest issue.

Unfortunately the Genius Bar staff just need to walk through a series of pre-defined tests, input the results and see what the app tells them to do next, so I do feel a bit sorry for them sometimes. Its also difficult, because on the web you can see a problem like this has maybe been experienced by other users, but unless Apple have picked it up due to stats from their support areas, its not going to have even filtered in to the support app being used in stores.

Ultimately you got a new unit so hopefully the problem is fixed, but its frustrating as hell when this happens, particularly if you've spent time and money getting to that point. I had three separate visits to an Apple Store after time spent online with their support about an intermittent iPhone fault and its only luck that the fault occurred when I was there the third time that I got a replacement device.

Maybe you had a faulty unit out of the box?

I am almost positive the heat from the CPU during drawing sessions on my 2017 caused the delamination process described above.

That’s interesting actually because I remember the iPad being a little hot the first time it stuttered. It definitely wasn’t faulty out of the box. The first month of usage was flawless.

I completely get that and I know that they are trained to just look at their diagnostics. I’m ok with them doing what they need to, but it was the continued inference that the problem was because of something I was doing and little to no sympathy that I had spent $2000 on a device that was faulty 2 months in.

My 2017 was flawless at launch. Touch issues started around six weeks in. I felt areas of the casing get rather hot while drawing.
As with previous device with touch issues they issues only show up after some component or ribbon cable is heated and gets warped or distorted out of place by the heating and cooling.

I believe it.

Thanks for posting about this.

It stinks that this happens and Apple hasn’t addressed it three generations in. Even at a slightly more reasonable sale price, the iPad Pros are no longer worth it to me.

Not for everybody! :(

It's indeed getting more and more widespread. I experience the same on two iPads 2017 (one is the replacement). And here are more threads on this:

(10 pages of comments!)

No solution! It gets replaced and then the same problem is there again :(

iOS 12.2 fixed my screen issue on 11” pro....WHAT a Relief! Am also using Zagg screen protector without further issue.

I guess we’re gonna start repasting our iPads with fresh thermal gel lol. Wonder if that would lower temps and help. It works with everything else.

Does the Crook even respond to polite emails nowadays...? I sent him one couple of months back, no reply, not even a phone call. SJ on the other hand had his people called me next business day.

I’ve had the 12.9” iPad Pro LTE since launch day - I’ve never had this stuttering issue through various iOS 12 upgrades.

His team used to.

I think he’s going to get another one from me about the touch irresponsiveness showing up on almost every model (returned my Mini 5 because of this just now). I am just so gutted and annoyed.

I’ve had the problem since I first bought the ipad in early december, been through 4 software updates with no fix, tried turning off or changing every possible setting, even completely erased and set up as a new ipad and no fix. I am almost certain its a hardware issue. I returned to Apple and received a brand new replacement which is now having the same issues, possibly even worse now.
The issue occurs in every single app, on the homescreen and in settings.

Im now planning on asking for a refund this time which is a shame because I really like this ipad...

Check out these videos I have posted on youtube that show the issue:

How can Apple say this is okay. I had issue with an ipx with responsiveness and ghosting. Fixed right away no problem.

Hey, can you get this to happen on a hard surface like a table? I’ve been paying attention to when this has happened to me today and it’s only been when I’m in bed or on the couch with the iPad propped up on a blanket. It never happened whenever I was in the kitchen using it on the table. Can this be a static electricity problem? Does everyone experiencing this live in a part of the world that is cold and dry right now?

It happens on all surfaces, although with the first ipad I could make the problem occur every time I changed the angle of the ipad such as laying the ipad down then suddenly picking up or vice versa it would become laggy. That made me think it was an issue with the gyroscope or something but with the new replacement it just happens randomly anywhere. In NZ it was a hot summer when I first started experiencing the issues.

I only just noticed this other day. I thought it was a random thing. Pencil was working fine then just stopped. I kept double tapping thinking I was in erase mode and nothing happened. I could see if switch functions and it was charged. Then all of a sudden all of my fandom marks showed up on my note sheet. I’m going to pay a bit more attention to this now.

Maybe coincidence but we just had a warm spell here in Michigan and the humidity spiked as well. (The dehumidifier in the basement turned on for the first time in months). I have not had a single incident of the screen being unresponsive since the temperature/humidity rose.

My launch day 3rd gen 12.9 didn’t stutter but the screen would freeze up and wouldn’t responded to touch/scrolling inputs. I thought it was my screen protector as other threads indicated. I removed my glass screen protector and the problem continued. My son was able to catch a video of it refusing to scroll with his phone. I took it in for a genius appointment. The Apple employee didn’t even ask to see the video. She just ordered me a replacement. No issue. I’ve never had a single negative customer service issue with Apple. Honestly, the Genius’ don’t have any reason to treat a customer bad. It’s not like it cost them to replace a product.

My replacement 12.9 has been great like all my past iPads.

just for curiosity's sake, how many people here are left handed/ambidextrous?

A lot of people (I'm assuming right handed people as they are ~95% of the population) had problems with palm rejection in Goodnotes 5. I haven't had a single problem with that feature (I am predominantly left handed) and minimal screen stuttering (none since updating to IOS 12.3).

Winters are always very dry where I live - but I've got a big aquarium upstairs and I'm havong to add water once a week.
