You’re right. I was thinking of upgrading my base M1 Pro 8/14 and to an M3 Pro or Max, but now I’ll def wait. These iPads are gonna stall Mac sales; people will put them off until M4 variants come out (IMO) in larger numbers
No reason at this point to pay top dollar for verified old tech
(I say this as someone happy as heck with my M2 15" Air I got in the fall last year)
I think any conversation about iPadOS should be tabled until after WWDC.Cue all the "it's too much power for such a limited OS" comments.
Siri is not Apple AI. It’s like saying what’s the point of Nvidia when their chat bot app doesn’t work well.Apple was talking about Neural Engine with 38Trillion calculations per second. But QC Snapdragon X Elite claim that their chip can handle 45 Trillion operations per second! Apple did point out that they had Neural Engine since A11 Bionic but what's the point if they can't even get Siri to work properly?.
You will be waiting for more WWDC. If you are expecting iPad OS to morph in to Mac OS, I doubt it will happen any time soon. It’s been going on for past 8-10 WWDC.I think any conversation about iPadOS should be tabled until after WWDC.
Geekbench 6 Metal Score : 53.792 vs M3 : 43.789 (+22%)How improved is the GPU?
Already going against the grain of my previous statement lol. I am not expecting anything, but I never mind being pleasantly surprised. You will be waiting for more WWDC. If you are expecting iPad OS to morph in to Mac OS, I doubt it will happen any time soon. It’s been going on for past 8-10 WWDC.
AMD isn’t. Look at their Zen processors. Granted, they don’t release a new one each year, however they get >10% IPC gains each time without fail. They are in fact due to repeat this with Zen 5 in Q3. I am not knocking Apple, the M series chips are incredible. I am just very curious what they plan to do next. The industry, in general, is running into the same issue.
The M4 is only faster than your M3 Pro in single core. It’s still slower in multi-core. That happens in every generation as the improvements in the base cores is where the improvements are focused.I knew an M4 was eventually coming. What I didn't know was that the base M4 would be faster than my M3 "Pro" not very Pro like of my M3.
All those claims mean little without the context of exactly what they are measuring.Apple was talking about Neural Engine with 38Trillion calculations per second. But QC Snapdragon X Elite claim that their chip can handle 45 Trillion operations per second! Apple did point out that they had Neural Engine since A11 Bionic but what's the point if they can't even get Siri to work properly?.

Uh, hate to break this to you…I hope there aren't two variants on Mac like there are on iPad... stats like those in this thread are already misleading because they belong to the "full fat" M4 rather than the gimped one that 99% of people will end up with in the iPad Pros.
But available, now.Guess my M3 Pro MacBook Pro I just got is obsolete already.
I know it not the same. But I replaced my Windows laptop with an M1 Pro and use Windows via RDP to a desktop box. I used to carry two decives everywhere, but when they added mouse support to iPad OS I was finally able to make the leap and cut down to just my iPad on vacations, business trips, etc.Now that Apple allows emulators in the App Store, VMWare or Parallels needs to develop one so that we can run Windows or MacOS on these things.
Not sure where Apple will go next (unless losing a lot of silicon designers to Nuvia did hurt them a little) but this post is interestingAMD isn’t. Look at their Zen processors. While your comment is tongue in cheek, the criticism is true. But, my commentary to the criticism, though is that we've had a Desktop / Laptop replacement tablet for over a decade in the x86 MS Surface Pro tablets. More recently, SΛMSUNG DeX has been a thing for the better part of a decade. And neither have lit the world on fire, much less, amount to anything other then a rounding error.Cue all the "it's too much power for such a limited OS" comments.
being slower than m4 does not make m3 obsoleteGuess my M3 Pro MacBook Pro I just got is obsolete already.
I feel exactly like you. Had I known Apple would release a new chip so soon after the M3, I would have waited. I feel cheated….Guess my M3 Pro MacBook Pro I just got is obsolete already.
Interesting reading that ..... there have been a couple of tech content creators who have recently called out the various test components that make up a geekbench score. It's about how the number is derived and does the final "higher score" necessarily mean an improvement in specific areas that your workload would benefit from. Not sure where Apple will go next (unless losing a lot of silicon designers to Nuvia did hurt them a little) but this post is interesting
I'm not arguing explicitly arguing against an iPad Pro being able to "dual boot" or whatever - But, if there was more then niche appeal - wouldn't the x86 MS Surface Pro tables running desktop Windows made in roads, dented iPad sales, or taken the world by storm? All that power in the engine of the car and the wheels are elliptical. Next design should be a headless MacBook and and iPad attachment. Attach the iPad for macOS and remove for iPadOS. Even if it’s expensive I’d buy one. But for now having many iPad pros and MacBooks I’ll still use my MacBook all the time. And yes Apple is still the best products period. Just that the iPadOS is really pathetic when it comes to that last 10% of real work being done on it.
I just bought an M3 Max, because it's here now, and I know what it can do now rather than speculate about what something might do at some point in the future.I feel exactly like you. Had I known Apple would release a new chip so soon after the M3, I would have waited. I feel cheated….
