So how do you explain ESPN sending me alerts every time the Yankees score or are scored upon?

My iPad spends 90% of its time asleep. MobileMe and ESPN push notifications are working. It's just Yahoo that's not.

What I'll do is turn off "fetch" completely and see if the MobileMe mail and ESPN push notifications get through.

BJ

The ipad like the iPhone and iPod touch turns wifi off when in sleep but if the email is being fetched periodically then the wifi connection would become active allowing outstanding push notifications to be collected.

No it isn't. Did you try it??

I did, I don't have a company, and I don't have any servers of my own. It works. I'm assuming Google has more than enough servers to go around.

Google has servers inside their servers.

Yes, I tried it. And it said that my administrator had to enable Google something that required ActiveSync and (what I took to read as) an Exchange Server.

If I'm wrong, I apologize.....please tell me how to do it correctly.

BJ

If you are getting MobileMe notifications then it has to be fetching.

No wifi on a wifi only model = no push. Think about it.

Huh? Not sure I follow you.

My wifi-only model receives push email and other push notifications (Prowl, for example) day and night. Even if the iPad has been sleeping for hours, as long as it is in range of a wifi network it knows, it will receive push email and push notices. I can hear it even when I haven't touched it for hours and even taking it from home (where is knows the wifi network) to the car (no wifi) and in to work (where it knows the wifi network) without waking it up. It reassociates with the new wifi network and continues to receive data, all while asleep.

Not sure why the OP is having his issue.

Mine does not. Mobileme Push works round the clock. My iPad dings, then my iphone, then the laptop. I can pretty much tell where ever I am in the house when I get an email, ding, ding, ding.

I was glad to find out push works when sleeping because I had read before the iPads came out that they were unsure if wifi was turned off during sleep..

I'm on my iPhone or I would write a longer explination.

When the ipad sleeps it turns wifi off. If it didn't sleep times would be massivly reduced.

So.... Basically if wifi is off the ipad must have a fetch cycle of some sort say every 15 minutes. When the connection is enabled outstanding push messages come through.

Hope that makes more sense.

My WiFi only iPad does not give me the option for Yahoo push email. I know how to look for it and it's not there. I even deleted my account and added it back thinking that maybe when I migrated the info from my iPhone to iPad something got lost.

Maybe the 3G iPads allow Yahoo push?

And Wifi is on when the iPad is asleep. I get my exchange email pushed all the time, as well as any AIM messages while it's asleep. When I drive home and walk in the door, I often get the mail chime since it connected to the network and got my email.

This does not appear to be the case. My wifi-only iPad will make the new email sound at the same time as my iPhone does (or sometimes as much as 10 seconds before). It's not simply fetching every 15 minutes (especially since my iPad is not set to fetch at 15 minute intervals).

Sounds silly, but toggle your PUSH settings off and then on again.

Worked for me! And yes iPad gets email while sleeping.

Oh! If you're using a Google Apps for Domains account, you must enable Google Sync in your Domain's Mobile settings. It should work automatically for regular Gmail accounts.

I use both a Google Apps account, and a normal Gmail account, and can confirm that Push works on both. (After jailbreaking and installing MultiExchange to allow more than one Exchange account, of course ;) )

Until I read this thread I did not realize my google mail wasn't getting pushed. I used the alternate set-up linked to in this thread and now my mail and my contacts are in sync. So thanks!!!

Can we clarify Yahoo Mail push.

On my iPhone under: Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars->Fetch New Data

I have push enabled.

Under ->Advanced my Yahoo shows Push. My options for Yahoo are Push, Fetch, Manual

However, on my iPad, my on ONLY have 2 options: Fetch and Manual.

Why is this?

Do you have a 3G or a wi-fi model? The theory is that 3G people have the Yahoo Push option under advanced settings because AT&T can Push Yahoo wheras wi-fi people lack the Push option because wi-fi doesn't Push Yahoo.

No push

My iPad does not push my 2 yahoo accounts when I am at home or at a wifi hotspot. But at the same time my iPhone is giving me the email ding sound. I do have fetch set in advance and the mail settings. Seems to me I almost need to have my email manually fetch every 15 or 30 minutes like I had on my Treo 700p.

I have the WiFi model. I guess that makes sense.

3G iPad won't push Exchange on Wifi

This is frustrating:

I am working with a Wifi + 3G model. My exchange email will not push while wifi is active. MobileMe pushes fine. All of my settings are correct. I have an iPhone 3GS that everything works perfectly on.

If I turn wifi off, and it's running solely on 3G, it pushes perfectly.

On wifi, only when I go into my mail application will it pull my exchange emails. It's acts as if it's in Manual Mode.

I turned wifi on and off, toggled the different push, fetch, and manual settings for the account, Deleted and re-setup the account. Do I really need to restore my iPad after a day of having it?

Please help!

Andrew

Ok. So a little update and more frustrations. After threatening the iPad with a trip to the genius bar at midnight, and deleting and re setting up the exchange email again, it pushes the inbox.

I would like to be able to keep my trash and sent in sync as well. On my iPhone, I do not have the settings to push the trash and sent folders, however when I accessed those folders for the first time, all of the mail populated, and stayed. All I do to update them is manually go into thre folder and any new trash or sent populates. So all of my trash and sent is perfectly there and searchable on my iPhone.

Now, when I go to the trash folder or sent folder on my iPad, the emails populate slowly, then stop at a certain point, sometimes disappear. When i go back into the folder they are gone, etc. Very erratic. If I set the mail to sync those folders, as I should be able to, they do not load, AND! my push inbox no longer pushes!!!!!! I have to delete the account, reset it up, and soft reset the iPad for the inbox to push again.

What gives? Does anyone out there have their trash, sync, and sub folders nicely syncing on the iPad. I refuse to believe that anything that works so perfectly on the iPhone just won't on iPad.

3G model offers push, WiFi model doesn't.

I have a 3G model, and my dad just got the WiFi model.

My iPad has the option under "advanced" for Push. (push, fetch, manual)

My dad's iPad does not have the Push option. (fetch, manual)

*The only thing I can think of is that the 3.2.1 update might fix it, I will check and post a reply with the answer.

The update 3.2.1 did not fix the problem, wonder why the WiFi model doesn't offer the push option, very strange that it only occurs with Yahoo.

I thought upgrading to Yahoo Plus might fix the issue, but no luck there either. So I'm really happy i just spent $25 on an email address for my father.

I think it's an issue with the iPad wifi+3G only

If you're connected to wifi with cellular data enabled then email push seems to stop working. If you disable cellular data then it starts working fine, even when its in sleep mode

I assume it's a bug, though I can't find many others who have this issue other than this thread here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/961515/ where the user disables 3G and it works

I emailed yahoo and here's the actual answer:

"Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Mobile.

I understand that you are not able to use the push functionality when
using your iPad with Wi-Fi only, though it works on the iPad with 3G
capabilities. I am happy to address this with you.

We are continually working to make Yahoo! Mobile the best mobile
experience available. Unfortunately, push is not available via Wi-Fi. I
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. However, I am
sending your product suggestion to the Yahoo! Mobile Product Group for
review.

Blah blah"

That just sucks.

I think he could have saved us time by simply replying to you saying: "We at Yahoo don't care." Anyhow, I do not have the Push feature on my Wi-Fi only model either. Only push I have is for my G-Mail which allows Mail, Calendar, and Contacts to sync.

The reason Yahoo mail push doesn't work via WiFi is because of the way logging in to Yahoo Mail works on the phone. When you log into Yahoo's mail servers on an idevice, it doesn't establish a secure connection to the mail server since Yahoo refuses to use IMAPS with idevices for whatever reason (very dumb idea since it means people can snoop your mail). As such it doesn't send the Yahoo username and password since that could easily be intercepted.

Instead it when you add the Yahoo account to the phone it signs in securely to Yahoo's servers with your username and password as well as a IMEI number (which is only available on mobile phone or 3G data devices). It gets back a cookie. When checking for mail it uses the cookie and IMEI to log in.

See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/1349.htm

Yahoo uses the IMEI number to send push notices. As WiFi only devices have no IMEI number, push won't work with them. In fact push won't work on an iPhone or iPad 3G if cell data is turned off (or not subscribed).
