That's right the Engadget FCC pictures show two speakers together. the guys at the FCC were so intrigued by it that they took a whole series of disassembly photos.

My Hands on impression with the speakers is that it's fairly loud for a device its size.
When I was browsing safari with the iPod playing in the background, I can feel the screen vibrate when I touch it due to the speakers. I only have the volume at 1/3 BTW. It feels a bit weird touching the vibrating screen. It almost feel a little bit like you are being electrocuted.
Another thing is that it sounds fuller when you have the iPad handled vertically with speaker grill facing down at you. When you use it horizontally, it sounds mono due to the fact it's futher away from one of the ears.
