Fake iTunes update link steals user data targets Apple’s new tablet Mac

A virus that specifically targets users of the iPad is doing the rounds, TechRadar reports.

Delivered in an email, the virus disguises itself as an update for iTunes. However, once the link is clicked personal data is stolen from the machine.

“Identified by BitDefender as Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY, the piece of malicious code inadvertently downloaded injects itself into the explorer.exe process and opens up a backdoor that allows unauthorised access to and control over the affected system,” a press release from anti-virus firm BitDefender reads.

“Moreover, it attempts to read the keys and serial numbers of the various software installed on the affected computer, while also logging the passwords to the victim's ICQ, Messenger, POP3 mail accounts, and protected storage.”

If clicked, the link does not appear to pose any threat to Mac or PC users.

It's a Windows virus.

But at least you posted the info as a public service. :)

You're right. It is a windows virus, but there's no proof that it actually does anything, let alone steal any personal information.

As for people asking why anyone would click on the link, of course people would. Due to the simplicity of the iPhone OS, it attracts simplistic people. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone with an iPad is simplistic, but has anyone been in an Apple store lately?

This is an outrage. It's being reported all over the net as a flaw in the iPad, when it's simply another Windows Trojan that has the word "iPad" in the distribution email.
Let's be very clear:
this is a Trojan, not a virus
this only affects Windows, not the iPad
Even people who know this are trying use this to justify derogatory comments about Apple users. Frankly every iPad owner I know, are technical professionals who love gadgets.

Luckily I don't run "explorer.exe" on my iPad... wait a minute... NO ONE runs explorer.exe on their iPad.

What's actually described is a trojan horse that targets iPad owners who sync to a Windows machine. This article doesn't make much sense, though. E.g., the last two lines are contradictory:

“Moreover, it attempts to read the keys and serial numbers of the various software installed on the affected computer, while also logging the passwords to the victim's ICQ, Messenger, POP3 mail accounts, and protected storage.”

If clicked, the link does not appear to pose any threat to Mac or PC users.

Reading keys, serial numbers and logging passwords, etc. doesn't pose a threat to PC users? ... I guess because they're used to it by now? ;)

First of all, it's a trojan not a virus. Huge difference.
Second as noted it does not target the iPad, but Windows iTunes users.

Basically, it's a load of the same old bullcrap.

The next time you are tempted to believe Mac users are more intelligent than Windows users, remember Rush Limbaugh uses Mac. I know that makes some of you shudder. But don't panic, we are allowed to keep using Macs despite the fact that Rush uses one.

As for a virus/trojan/whatever that attacks explorer.exe, that's purely a windows problem. You can run an exe on your Mac under Crossover and the most harm it can do is corrupt the Windows 2000 virtual machine that Crossover created to run the exe. I use it all the time for self extracting zip files posted as exe files by thoughtless web authors.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

False!
Explorer.exe is on a windows machine not the iPad. I have seen a Mac do anything with an .exe file.

Clever way to get page views by this article.
Move along nothing to see here.
