ipad vs hp mini 5102

No contest.

iPad.

The HP is basically a netbook, it runs Intel Atom, which on my Asus Eee PC struggled to play HD 720p video.

For killing time you can't go wrong with the Apple apps. Much more portable and better battery life. Instant on power is good.

Believe me if you got the HP, you'd be wishing you had the iPad instead if you see others with it.
 
lol thanks for the suggestions only thing the hp really has on the ipad is a 2.0mp webcam but idk
 
You need to ask if you need a full blown os or not. If not then ipad.

If you really need a webcam then go for it.

But do you really use it everyday? I have iSight on my iMac and a webcam on my netbook, but I don't use it. If I need to talk to someone I call or text...the only reason I could see the use of Skype, is to see newborns, grandkids, etc. Otherwise, I remember what the other person looks like.

Hmmm. I've got a Dell Mini9 with XP. Its a very cool little device that I've enjoyed using for the last year or so. I'd guess that 90% of my use is web browsing and email and I think the iPad will be much more convenient to use when performing these two tasks (I hope so given i've got one on order).

The two things I'm probably most excited about are the 'instant on' aspect and multi-touch on a bigger screen. I keep the Mini9 in standby mode at all times so the boot time is not bad but it still seems like a bit of a process to actually get the thing open and ready to use. In fact, much of the time I just end up using my iPhone or Touch.

I'd say with an external keyboard for typing papers is a must. If they enable multi-tasking, then I'd say def say the iPad.

If you don't have any other computer I would highly recommend the netbook. Don't get me wrong I think the iPad is a great device, but only as a companion device.

I agree about the fact if you do not have any other computer... I'd wait on the iPad.

On the other hand don't waste your money on a Netbook when you can buy a real C2D laptop for 500/600 range that will blow away any netbook out there. Netbooks are trash, avoid them as a primary computer, you will be disappointed with performance overall. Forget gaming, forget video playback and toss battery life out the door, Dell, HP, MSI etc... all have 13 or 14" laptops with Intel CPU's, actual GPU's and the power to actually be useful.
 
i dont have a primary pc...is there any laptops in the 13-14 inch range you would recommend for under 800?

Atom is much more powerful than ARM processors. So, if anything HP Mini will be better at video playback

an ipad will not be a good idea if you don't have a primary computer. the hp mini is very slow and the screen is very small it will be hard to use it for long periods to write a paper. since you mentioned two small devices you probably want portability. look into the dell inspiron 11z or inspiron 13 they're cheap and will work better for you in the long run.

true but the netbook doesn't really have a graphics card while the iPad does which makes the difference.

I say if you must have a netbook as opposed to a laptop get a netbook with the ion graphics in it. then hd video play back will be no problem

idk how long you're at school for but for me this isn't long enough which means you'd have to bring a charger, which is what i'm trying to get away from
 
In this moment there are apple macbook white discounts, and you can buy it for $800. Check other threads in MR and you will see that. If you don't have a Primary computer, this can be a great solution and portable :)

In what? Atom isn't not that much more powerful than ARM, it's faster yes but not to the extent of saying "much more". ARM has been catching up lately to match or exceed Atoms, the Cortex A9 is the latest technology that has shown to be pretty damn good, enough to beat Atoms with even lower clock speed. Dual core A9 at 500mhz can match up pretty well against 1.6Ghz Atom chip, enough to beat Atom without a graphic card, source here.


If he's watching flash videos, HP will struggle so, playback isn't a bonus either here, it's a plus for having flash capability.


Now for the OP, I suggest going with the CLV laptops like Inspirion 11z, Vostro 13. Hell you can even get Dell Studio 15" laptop for under $800, trust me, if its for class and writing papers, I suggest getting a bigger screen. 15-16" laptops can be found cheaper than 800$, good ones too. You should look at slickdeals, logicbuy to find Dell's coupons to get good deals.

What you might have to consider is the battery life, do you want something that last all days in school? You might have to look at Asus netbook/notebooks, they are usually pretty good with battery life.

Well if you want a Windows netbook, go for the hp mini.

If you want a tablet, go for the iPad :p

Okay seriously . . . I have a netbook but will be getting an iPad as well. They are different devices . . . . apples :apple: and oranges.
 
If the only feature you want that the HP has over the iPad, think, what features does the iPad have that you want?

It's very light weight and thin, touch based, easy and fun to use, quick and easy access to books, music, videos, games...

You could get the $599 32GB iPad or the $629 16GB 3G iPad (not including $99 for AppleCare).
 
I had and sent back three HP Mini 5101s (had lots of quality issues). The bezel is monstrous and the tiny trackpad is absolutely useless (the glossy texture they put on it sucks as well).
Atom may be a faster chip but let me tell you, with an Intel SSD and 2GB of RAM, this thing still didn't fly. (Free upgrade! too bad it still had quality issues)

I would definitely consider the Lenovo instead. The Thinkpad nipple makes a lot more sense on netbooks than the 2"x1" touchpads that everyone keeps insisting on putting in these things. The only annoying thing about Thinkpads in general is the ugly battery-butt.
