really just want something to blow time inbetween classes
...then the iPad is a no-brainer. I can virtually guarantee that you will regret not buying one if you buy something else then go have a look-see at the iPad. Still not sure? The iPad will be out in a couple weeks. Go play with the NB you have listed then go play with the iPad and *you* make the decision.

white macbook gets too dirty/scratched up

I agree . . . I had an iBook several years ago. In fact I initially thought that the back of the iPad was black until I saw the photo.
Then I thought it was white. Now I know it's actually sliver. I think I can live with that ;)

Ask your college. The one I teach at has specifications it recommend for students. If you get the HP, don't get the cheap one with Windows Starter on it. It's got a fast hard drive, and the rest of the specs look decent. The 1024 x 600 screen will be cramped with some applications though. If you intend to use it for homework then definitely get something running a full fldged OS like Windows or OS-X. You'll need the ability to load printer drivers and (depending on your major) maybe plotter drivers.

Comparing apples and oranges here...if all you want to do is surf the net, email and play some games on the go iPad is better. If you are looking for a small portable pc replacement (albeit much slower) the HP is the way to go. All depends on your needs.

I have the HP Mini with the 11.6" high definition screen. It's a very nice netbook, but still a netbook. I've had a few of these since they came out and this HP is the best. Performs well and does not have the "cheap, plastic" look like most of the others.

I'm going to buy an iPad. It will be a different type of experience. I do not see how one will replace the other. I know that over time I will actively use both and be satisfied with both of them. However since I'm getting the 3G iPad, I do believe the iPad will be the device that gets most of the use overall.
