Hi there.
I have a question and its killing me.

After updating to iPadOS 13.4 I have a different layout for the onscreen keyboard. Apple Calls it ISO-QWERTY and it has a vertical return key, all my other mac’s are with normal QWERTY (the horizontale return) and so was my iPad on iPadOS 13.3.1

Looks like this is or changed by Apple or changed by a setting I cannot find.

I already tried the following:
  1. iOS 13.3.1 > Horizontale return > Update to 13.4 > Vertical return.
  2. New DFU installation 13.4 > Vertical return
  3. IOS 13.3.1 DFU installation > No backup > Horizontale return > Update > Vertical return.

I nailed it down to the following:
For my language (Dutch) I have 3 options for the keyboard,
ISO-QWERTY
AZERTY
QWERTZ

Only ANSI-QWERTY is the one we are use to here , somebody know how I get ANSI of normal QWERTY back?
If I choose for Enlish Us (for example) I get QWERTY as one of the options for that keyboard, only not for the dutch one.

Please help :)

Ah I thought for a moment I was alone in this, but now that’s both of us! This is also driving me bananas with French and German keyboards, now only available in ISO QWERTY...

I just twitted about it actually, let’s hope there’s a way back!

Aah welcome then! Spread the word.
I have not found a solution.

On a Dutch forum I dropped the Question. There I was alone, a lot of users there had still the QWERTY keyboard on 13.4

oh, could this be related to the iOS language? I still have the good old QWERTY when selecting Nederlands, but I have iOS set to English US...

That would have been a reasonable explanation, but it doesn’t seem to do trick over here... Even after a reboot.
Here’s my config, mind posting yours?

sure, here you go.
Note: not sure why it says 'just' English and not English US. I'd swear I set it to English US.
Oh, just noticed that it's Siri that's set to 'English (United States)'...

If I put the iPad on English (UK/US does not matter) and the Keyboard on Dutch it’s still ISO-QWERTY for me.

if I remove Dutch Keyboard the US one is also iso-QWERTY but there is then also a normal QWERTY option 🙃

edit: Btw i updated to the last beta just to be sure but that also does not help. I now am back on 13.4.1. Even when i restore my Dutch iPhone Backup on it (with QWERTY) it gives me iso-QWERTY

I thought ISO was the typical keyboard used in European countries. ANSI is what we typically use. You can tell the difference by the enter key and I think you have one additional key but I don't recall what it is. Mechanical keyboard users like the ISO because its different than the typical. I would guess you have been given ISO by default based on location.

There’s another post on the Apple forums about this issue. I will follow the suggestion on the Apple forums, and send feedback to Apple about this.

Could it be that this issue only reproduces on the 12.9" iPad? If that was the case, I wonder if the behavior we’re observing wouldn’t be a bug? I can’t find this change documented anywhere.

Thank you for the help! I followed the steps described in your post hoping that these incantations would allow the black magic to operate, but I’m still out of luck.
i think the problem described here is fairly different: we want different keyboards (Dutch, German, French...) to have the US QWERTY layout (with the flat return key), as it used to be prior to iOS 13.4 (vs ISO QWERTY now).

NB: hi from a French guy in Germany :)

Hmm, I hadn’t noticed this change until you mentioned it, but it’s the same in English, too.

It more strongly matches the Apple Magic Keyboard configuration:

Maybe the new iPad Pro Magic Keyboard case also has this config, and they are wanting to unify the layout across ‘promoted’ keybords?

Yeah it feels like they’re trying to rally non-US keyboards under the ISO standard.

But now, something that’s possible on the Mac with a physical keyboard - multiple languages under the same layout - isn’t possible on a virtual keyboard. Which is pretty ironic.

yes I am afraid that’s it indeed, I always select a BTO Mac and done so for years, don’t like it that they now force me in to it.

also strange that not everybody is having this on 13.4 and above.
