I’m a little confused. Do you NEED to use Stage Manager to connect to an external display and have a full screen app on an external monitor?

or will my 2018 iPad Pro (not SM compatible) still be able to connect to an external display and have a full screen app (not screen mirroring) on the external monitor?

Your iPad will only be able to mirror unless you're using an app like a video player that utilizes the full screen.

so any kind of external monitor use is still just mirroring (except for a video app) on older iPads. You really need the M1 for Stage Manager and using an external monitor with a different app than what’s on the iPad’s screen (even if you are using the old multitasking mode).

I have one more question if you are running the beta… are there any new options for assigning actions to a mouse’s other buttons (like the clickwheel) in iPadOS 16? I know you can do it in Assistive Touch, but I don’t like the compromises you need to do when you enable that (the pointer is different and reacts to UI elements differently).

Yes, you need an M1 device with Stage Manager.

I'm running the public 16 beta and don't see any additional mouse options (I use a Logitech MX Master 3).

do you use assistive touch to get those additional mouse optioins? or you just don’t deal with that? I really wish I could trigger multitasking w/ the mouse wheel click and also use hot corners.

Yes, I do use it.

I’m wondering if I’m missing anything with it? If I have assistive touch on, you can hide the little “quick menu” circle thing that shows up, but whenever you disconnect the mouse and just want to use touch only, the circle comes back so you then have to go into settings and turn off Assistive Touch.

Also Hot Corners only seems to work if you move the mouse to the corner and hold it there for 2.5 seconds (the quickest delay you can set).

Am I missing anything or are these just little annoyances people have gotten used to?

I’m trying to figure out if I can go iPad only, but these little annoyances with the mouse might be signs of a bigger problem with me ditching a Mac altogether.

Yes, these are "features" that you get used to. The implementation of mouse support leaves a lot to be desired. As it is necessary now for Stage Manager, one could hope that they improve upon it. It's strikingly odd to see this from a company that was a pioneer in smooth mouse operations.

You can add a Shortcut to Accessibility|Assistive Touch on the Control Center. I have both Reduce White Point and Assistive Touch on my Control Center Accessibility shortcut.

With that said, I have no plans to go completely iPad only. My work involves a lot of Excel and I use a Windows desktop (employer provided) for that. I’m around 90% iPad for personal use, though (mostly reading, web browsing, personal finances, etc).

IMO, navigating iPadOS with a trackpad is much better than a mouse and if you want more precision, that's when the Apple Pencil is useful.

I find the opposite myself and my Trackpad 2 sits unused and the Pencil sees little usage. When I use my Logi Combo Touch case, I still use the mouse, never the trackpad. Just a matter of personal preference. (M1 12.9)

I used the Magic Mouse 2 with iPadOS for about a year because I like the feel of the mouse… However, the reason why I think the Trackpad 2 is better is due to the amount gestures I’m are able to use.

Like you, I have the MX Master 3 and I tried using iPadOS with it… but the scrolling isn‘t as smooth compared to a Magic Mouse 2/Trackpad 2. Don’t get me wrong I like the wheel on the MX Master 3, but for some reason… the scrolling just doesn’t fit me.
