In a van down by the river
"Based on code found in iOS 17 RC, which was released to developers on Tuesday, Apple has developed a new feature that will let users limit the maximum battery charge to better preserve its health. Once available, the option will be found in the Battery settings menu.

When the feature is turned off, users will see a message saying that the iPhone “will charge to its full capacity.” But when the feature is on, it will inform the user that the battery “will only charge to about X%.” The Settings app will also show when the iPhone was last recharged to the limit set by the user."

If this happens, I think it will be a big selling point in several ways. I like the idea much better than having to go the Shortcuts route.

Sounds like exactly what the Ultra does after learning your charging habits.

I posted a thread wanting this feature for the iPhone and everyone made fun of it and said it was not needed. I only use may 20-30% of my 14 PM battery and have no need for it to charge to 100% every night. 80% would be more than enough and you still have the option of going all the way. There is no doubt this would increase battery life.

Nice find. This would be welcome as it gives me the control. The way it works now, it relies on consistency to determine when to cap the battery charge. I'm not routine enough so the current feature didn't work for me.

I have been using Shortcuts (along with a smart plug) to cap charging.

I have been using shortcuts automation to have the smartplug turn off when my phone reaches 85%. This will be a game changer. I wonder if we can set the % or i wonder what the default would be. 🤔

Why so much fuss over a $99 consumable part over 2 year ?
No big fuss here but, if one can make the battery last a little longer before replacing why not make use of such a feature? There are members here who are overly obsessive about this issue and in that regard, I would agree with your statement.

I don't think there is much fuss to be honest.

Some folks (me included) don't see the need to unnecessarily overcharge the phone's battery and reduce its lifespan, despite the modest battery replacement cost.

The current solutions to limit charging % are cumbersome, relying on shortcuts with third party devices, or Apples "optimised battery charging" function which is a nice idea in theory, but it's implementation IMO is quite poor.

Much easier to have a native iOS software solution which gives the user the choice to set a max battery charge %.

Damn I didn't know you could do this via shortcut... I wish I had known, maybe my less than one year old 14PM wouldn't be at 91% battery health right now lol.

Love this idea, I use AlDente on my MacBook Pro to keep it going past 80-85% most of the time. Definitely helps with battery health. Would absolutely make use of this on iPhone if it was an option.

Doesn’t Watch OS 10 do this? I swear my watch will sometimes charge to 80% or whatever and then stop.

Ideally it wouldn't be...hopefully it'll be rolled out across all phones which support ios 17...lets wait and see.
Hopefully, so but, we are talking Apple and they have a penchant for doing such. The article did state that such information was not found in the iPhone 14 RC release. I can't see how this would be limited to hardware unless said hardware is the new USB-C connect.
