Funny, happened with me as well, one agent told me you can convert to installments after you pay in full, next agent told me I cannot…

Hmm interesting. I wonder what they mean by “easily able to switch”. Do they mean immediately activate on carrier or our choice upon unboxing? Or sign up with the carrier we selected online, then switch after a month?
I’m guessing immediately? I’m just wondering when I receive the phone and do the initial setup, is it going to ask me for t-mobile account information or let me setup whatever carrier I want?

They told me I would have to switch it on with one of the 3 first, then after I can change to any carrier. Yeah ok

I set up two preorders just in case. I’m going to try ACMI first, but falling back to buying outright.

I made sure to let the GS rep know there is no point in me keeping the Apple Card if they don’t let me take advantage of the free financing.

Hearing that this is a GS restriction makes much more sense. They are trying to get out of the Apple Card business because it’s not lucrative. This is a step in getting people to not use it.

Back on topic. I remember maybe 7-8 years ago Apple didn’t sell SIM free for one of the iPhone launches and the T-mobile iPhone was the way around it. That sounds like it may be the case this time around.

If you can put an order in, I feel pretty confident you won’t need to activate the device on any carrier. It will be a SIM free phone like any other iPhone just not classified that way.

I placed my T-Mobile order as well. I also bought one outright just in case it doesn't work.

EDIT: I actually opted for the Citizens monthly payments instead of Apple Card. Probably doesn't make a difference.

Yes I was able to pre pre-order with T-Mobile with no info required and then I was able to purchase just now. I find it highly unlikely that Apple will have a system in place where it requires activation when we get the phones, but we will all know by Friday.

Also @Nikos it actually does make a difference of using ACMI and the Apple Phone Payment Plans (Citizens).

Here are the footnotes for the Citizen plan

  1. Apple iPhone Payments is available to qualified customers with a credit check and eligible U.S. credit or debit card. Requires a 24-month installment loan with a 0% APR from Citizens Bank, N.A. (subject to any interest, fees, or other costs payable to the card issuer), and iPhone activation with one of these national carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Sales tax and any applicable fees due at time of purchase. Full terms apply.

Whereas the language for ACMI is

  1. If you buy an ACMI eligible product by choosing to pay in full with Apple Card (instead of using ACMI), that purchase is subject to the Apple Card variable APR, not 0% APR. Taxes and shipping on ACMI purchases are subject to the variable APR, not 0% APR. You’ll need to select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon as your carrier when you check out. An iPhone purchased with ACMI is always unlocked, so you can switch carriers at any time.

I think anyone with ACMI who was able to purchase is good. Perhaps it's an unintended loophole. Perhaps Apple and GS are playing a game for some legal reason above our heads. Here's to hoping that everything works out for us.

Some data analyst somewhere at Apple or T-Mobile is probably going to be wondering what the heck is going on.

Wonder if this will get ‘fixed’ or not.

So - because it didn‘t seem to tie to phone number - I went ahead and bought two color via Apple Card installments. I checked out with no issues, no account info needed, so really hoping nothing gets messed up! Just not ready to commit on a color yet. Do we think both phones will ship??

I don’t see why not!

Interesting, thanks for sharing that. I'll share what happens next week. Have a feeling I'll have to keep the one I purchased out right.

I mentioned it earlier, but the T-Mobile loophole has worked in the past when Apple did not sell SIM free at launch. Nothing indicates activation is required.
