My speculative guess: the lenses being aligned vertically will help create a more human-equivalent interocular distance between the two lenses, possibly to produce truer-3D photos for use with a 3D headset device.
Huge regression!
People will think I have a 4 year old stupid iPhone12 instead of the latest iPhone 16 🥲
Thats why when they give you the curious look you need to rotate the phone to show them the USB-C standard.Huge regression!

It is called "planned psychological forced upgrade". They design the item with a MUCH older design and replace it with a completely NEW setup with iPhone 17, forcing you psychologically to upgrade to the newest design cause the "old-new" design is iPhone 11 era. Mark this post.Surprised to hear that the older design will make a comeback.

That's a good thing, they survived to grow up. We don't need mistakes at this point, and know what we need, right? You can certainly tell Apple has kinda run the well dry on innovation for the iPhone when physical changes like this are the big deal.
Easy: there won't.I just want to know if there’s gonna be a 16 mini
You need two lenses with the same optics to take stereo images, and they really need to have at least close to eye distance. Not happening. Take a look at the Stereolabs Zed cameras. My speculative guess: the lenses being aligned vertically will help create a more human-equivalent interocular distance between the two lenses, possibly to produce truer-3D photos for use with a 3D headset device.
Since diagonal cameras are associated with longer battery life, I can’t agree. But I can be convinced otherwise by a new phone. 😋📲The vertical camera layout looks way better.
Now people will tell me I have an iPhone 12![]()
It wasn’t. It was just a way to create a visual identity for the new phone that would otherwise be identical to the previous one and people couldn’t brag about having the lastest and greatest. Reverting to the previous design now serves exactly the same purpose. It’s all marketing and there are no technical reasons.I don’t know if I would call it “goofy”, but it does get the job done and was necessary.
