As a photographer I don't get it. I mean I've never felt that I have some sort of an autofocus problem on iPhone, when I need manually focus on something. So I don't understand why do I need this button feature on my phone. It may be handy for some rare cases when you can't use your display or something.

The feature of the two-step shutter release button actually goes back way in history to the first cameras with a real light meter and the first auto-focus cameras later. Tapping the shutter button would enable light metering and, if the camera has AF, engage the focus. Both settings would be held while the button is pressed. This also enables easy re-composition after measuring/focusing. Pressing the button all the way through would take the picture.

I would indeed be very happy if the iPhone would gain a "shutter button" in the right place. It would greatly improve its usability as a camera.

How does a two-step button work better than tapping on the screen to focus and then clicking the button to take the picture? Seems kind of pointless.
I can tell you right now that as someone with accessibility needs, tapping the screen to focus and or zoom isn’t always as easy as you make it sound.
The ability to capture, focus and zoom, all with button pushes and swipes, could actually be very helpful in a lot of situations.
Not anything I would upgrade for, but it’s nice to have, especially as our phones become less and less phone and more and more camera.

Wait for the shock and horror when they explain that its 4th gen butterfly mechanism underneath

This will be very useful for photographers (like me), but I hope it replaces the current action button instead of adding a new button. It would be really cool if the button had context aware functions (in camera: shutter, in music: mute, in email: new message, etc.).

Is a half-press focus function actually needed? That's the question...
I thought we progressed beyond that....aren't our phones supposed to be always in focus? With face recognition, object recognition, ultra-fast phase detect autofocus and all?

The 16 Pro and Pro Max are also expected to be virtually the same, with minor performance and camera improvements with this new capture button. Not exactly exciting.

I love my 15 Pro Max, but the S24 Ultra is a much more impressive phone. Better cameras that are more versatile, bigger better display, S-Pen, better AI, better multitasking, and now essentially equal performance with comparable ray tracing.

Essentially every standalone camera does this. Nothing “high end” about it, I guess it’s just been so long some people have forgotten how cameras work.
My Leica doesn’t do this. I think most would consider that to be high-end. Either way you slice it, the “high-end” descriptor is pretty stupid.

This is how I assumed it would work because it makes the kind of sense that does. Light hold to bring up the camera and autofocus, press in for an instant shot

When Steve Jobs announced the iPhone, he proudly said that they have removed all unnecessary buttons. Now Apple is putting them back because they ran out of ideas...

(Sony Ericsson and Nokia camera phones back then have the two stage shutter button if the camera has auto focus and I owned a couple of SE camera phones)

I much prefer rounded corners like the S24 and S24+. I’m skipping the 16 series waiting to see what the 17 has if it doesn’t have a refresh and more than cameras and CPU upgrades then I’m looking at the S26+. I’ll go back to Apple when they have their stuff together

Your fingers in one position and can quickly refocus while even holding the camera with one hand.

I'm amazed it's taken them this long to add something like this to be honest.

Isn't all this implied with a "Capture Button"? I certainly didn't expect it to be a dumb single press button... this "rumor" is common sense lol

Which model would that be? My M10 definitely activates and holds the exposure meter on tapping the shutter button. Of course, it cannot auto-focus anyway :p
