iPhone 17 Pro grille

I recently bought a new iPhone 17 Pro and noticed that the speaker grille doesn't fully cover the speaker opening. When viewed from a certain angle, the grille appears slightly shorter than the opening itself. Could this indicate a defect, or is it considered normal? The seller refused to replace the device, stating that this falls within the manufacturer's acceptable tolerances.

That looks unacceptable to me. If you bought it new, it is covered. Instructions on how to get it repaired/replaced are in Settings > your name > (scroll down to) your phone > AppleCare & Warranty. Click "Apple Support" -

Defect. That’s why some iPhones when water tested for the first time, fail.

I can’t even figure out exactly what I'm seeing… is the gasket being squeezed out from between the screen and body? If so, definitely replace.

If it’s just the glue and no visible gasket issues, I’d personally take the glue off with a toothpick. I’ve had to scrape excess adhesive off two of my iPads but it was less work for everyone than replacing them.

Did you get this iPhone off a third party site?

Also does it have AppleCare or warranty?
