I mean one could argue that the design of the iPhone X was pretty innovative and it was only 2 iterations ago. whether you love or hate the notch, many other manufacturers have copied it. Some people make it seem like the iPhone design hasn't changed since the iPhone 6.... I mean we have a brand new security feature in face ID, the removal of top and bottom bezels, and all new gesture based interactions with the OS.... Those are pretty significant innovations IMO...... I get that going from the X to the XS lines is really not a huge upgrade but if you have anything 7 or earlier it's pretty significant.

I would ideally like a slight re-design for the next model to have it look a little more like the new iPad Pro - usb C would be nice - reduced notch also nice..... and if not then hey I will just stand pat for another year and wont upgrade, simple as that.

I’m sorry but there’s nothing thick about the bezels on the iPhone. You need some to feel confident heading the devices.

I also don’t think a hole is any better than a notch either.

Compare normal eye glass frames and eye glass frames that are thick black frames. That's what the frame on the iPhone looks like. Ugly.

. Apple isn’t ‘lazy’ in terms of design, they’re just very conservative, which the iPhone 6 through 8 is a great example of that.
This is true and it is a conscious strategy from Apple..
But they have not hesitated to pass off every minor update as a radical redesign (They even claimed this for Iphone 8!)... And jack up prices..
I wouldn't hold my breath for the 2019 model though - AR hasn't still taken off and given their Qualcomm problems, the new iphone will probably have 'A13 processor' as its most exciting update.

I’m not sure if it will look entirely like this based off that render. But the orientation seems to make more sense, because it doesnt provide more depth on the ‘X pattern’ direction. If the camera is off axis to each other, it will add more for virtual reality rendering in addition.

I think we all know what to expect. An incremental upgrade with a smaller notch, faster processor, improved face id. But in the realm of hopefulness, I want to see a 2018 iPad Pro-style design. I’m a big fan of the 5 and SE models. The boxy design is cool and would be a good design language refresh. What do you guys think? Also, who do you think will be the first to achieve a true all-screen design? No notch, no camera cutout, everything under the display.

If the iPhone X is to the iPhone 6 what the XS is to the 6s, we can think of the XR as the SE, and the next model as an incremental iPhone 7-type product

The iPhone 5 boxy design doesn’t work well with bigger phones. It will make the phone feel thicker and uncomfortable because of sharp edges.

I expect apple to realize that iPhones (all high end phones)are overengineered. I could imagine they keep the XI very similar to the XS and expand on the XR style phones to gain more access to the mass market. So overall I expect 2019 tone a incremental improvement with same form factor. We get more Animoji’s and other useless stuff instead. Maybe a triple camera design on the top end.

The focus doesn’t need to be hardware, and Apple’s know that, and so does the consumer. The focus needs to be iOS revamping. It needs to be a constant maturity process of improving the software, Siri etc. No one cares about stainless bands over the course of time, what they care about is the experience they have with iOS, the security and its ecosystem how it communicates throughout other devices.

Even though FaceID 2 is pretty much confirmed as coming, I bet even if Apple could shrink the notch this year, they won't. It's too early for them to do so without looking like it was an eyesore instead of a design element. After four years? Sure, maybe they'll shrink it but I wouldn't get your hopes up for it to happen this year.

I agree on that one. However the thread was about the phone itself.

In any case if they improve the software then there is no real reason to upgrade unless older phones are not supported. So in the end they have to update the hardware somehow.

I just have no idea what a killer feature could be, software or hardware. I hope apple surprises us with something great.

I think the triple lens camera has a lot of potential, especially with virtual rendering. I think this year we will see more advancemrns in that specific area, and the real question is, does Apple make that exclusive to the Max or offer that to both 2019 XS phones.

I’m going to be in the minority here and say I hated the boxy look of the 5/5S/SE. If this year’s iPhone adopt the 5/5S/SE and 2018 iPad Pro design, I won’t be updating my X this year.

I waiting for someone to say this. I hate the boxy look of the 2018 iPads, and definitely would hate it on a X Max this year.
