Well of course yes i will as a last resort, but im a little unclear about a few things...

If i go the O2 route can i still use my same mobile number?
Once O2 unlock your phone you can use any SIM card.

Just let me say this, as others have said before:

Jailbreaking does not stop you from accessing the App Store. It is another issue.

The only reasons not to jailbreak are for performance and morality reasons (maybe warranty too).

If you want to use your phone, just jailbreak the latest firmware and that's it.

If only it was that simple...

I have a unibody MBP which cost me near on £1600, bought from new. I had to purchase a damn mini displayport - DVI adaptor for an additional £20 even though my Dell 2408WFP monitor has a displayPort but Apple doesn't supply a mini-full size displayPort lead. After just 2 weeks the mini-displayport was acting strangely, i had to send my MBP to a service centre and was told the logic board needed to be changed. Apple refused to replace my MBP with a brand new one until i threatened them with legal action...

Moral of the story is... I HATE APPLE  (as a company) though i love their products

So believe me there is no moral reason for me not jailbreaking my iPhone, if i had it my way i'd kick Mr Jobs in the nuts whilst i watched him jailbreak my iphone for me all teary eyed and then make him apologise for his ridiculous DOA period, but as i mentioned before when i jailbreak the phone i can ONLY make emergency calls even when using bootneuter to unlock the network.

Perhaps you can confirm or direct me to the latest firmware for my 2G iPhone (everything i seem to find is for 3G) i would like to say i have tried jailbreaking with ipsw 3.1 (7C144) and 3.1.2. (7D11) which work but i cannot access the AppStore so i then update via iTunes and the fone locks again!

Everyone keeps saying that the AppStore problem is due to some other reason, maybe you would be kind enough to list a few possibilities?

I have a 2G iPhone running firmware version 3.1.2. I just upgraded normally through iTunes then I used blackra1n to jail break, then bootneuter to unlock (this was before I got O2 to do it). It worked fine for me. No problems accessing the App Store.

But, upgrading to non-jailbroken firmware won't bring back the App Store if it doesn't work on the jailbroken firmware. So it's not even worth trying.

Bungle, Macdim, Gentlemen... Thanks for all your help...

I've given up with this deranged piece of kit.

CHEAP iPhone 2G for sale!

I have a replacement case, external speaker, antenna and new headfones on the way. I'll fix this up as much as possible i think and then sell it on..

Just another day with an Apple product...

I have a 2g also but when I plug it into my comp iTunes says it needs a sim card or sim pin. Can it be jailbroken/ unlocked with this happening? In order to restore and update firmware I had to hold the home button down as I plugged it into my comp then the option to restore came up

Make sure your sim is in the phone first i think, then hold down Option (Mac) or Alt (PC) i think when clicking the restore button in iTunes. This will then give you the browse window where you can point to your custom hacked ipsw file.

Usually a quick google of "iPhone firmware" will find a few sites where you can get the latest firmware. Pretty sure you'll always lose the unlock/jailbreak if you "update" to latest firmware in iTunes rather than downloading and modding the latest then doing a "restore" on it.

I agree with those saying the AppStore problem isn't due to the jailbreak. I've seen a jailbroken/unlocked 3G connect to the AppStore without issues. The why (could be a lot of things) is probably less important than the how to get it working. Your best bet is to wipe the phone completely (DFU, reset to factory defaults, etc), grab the latest firmware online then use the Pwnage tool on it, then restore to it. You'll need the SIM you plan to use in it while doing the above... I've seen the process fail without the SIM.
