Oddly....

I have an iPhone 3G from O2 (UK) and have I just upgraded my firmware to 2.2 (5G77). Using a iSmartfone sim-hack and Vodafone UK, I am still able to use the iPhone without any apparently problems. Please can someone tell me when you've discovered your issues?

I didn't software jailbreak the iPhone prior or after, just used the sim-hack.

You would discover it right away, since the phone would say it's an "Invalid SIM".
Apparently you have an updated piggyback-sim that works with 2.2.

I'm using ismartphone on a 3G running 2.1 software/baseband. My iphone will work for about 4 hours then go to "No Service". Then I have to put my SIM into a Tmobile phone and then switch it back to my iPhone and it will work unlocked for another 4 hours until it goes to No Service again. My opinion is that these SIM unlockers are a scam crap. I'm in the USA running Tmobile.

That's what my TurboSIM used to do, so I changed to ismartphone and that worked perfectly.
Now I'm unlocked with yellowsn0w, but if you're still not then you might wanna try have your ismartphone-sim changed..

i had the same problems , tried downgrading to 2.1 , but got error code 1013 and 13.

downgraded to 2.0.2 and still not working "NO SERVICE"

will try a new sim card from o2 on monday

How did you down grade it to 2.0.2 ??? I am trying but still get error. I had the same problem as you did.
