i have an iphone 3g, and twice now, at different times, my home button was not responding at all... i looked up help on google and found one thing that worked.... Take all ur iphone contents and back it up into itunes, under the summary tab. make sure that any music thats not in itunes, but is in ur phone, gets into itunes and backed up as well. Then, restore it. this takes a while but definetly worked for me. Though after the restore was complete, i turned my phone on and off again. If this doesnt work, feel the back of ur phone... is it really warm?? if it is, turn it off and let it cool completely down to room temp, then turn back on. If that didnt help, then im sure u have some physical problem, like water damage or home button is jammed up on somethin

Everything you mention (except the last thing) has nothing to do with this thread and why the home button does not work.

doesnt bodyguardz give you a lifetime warranty? if so just tell them that they ruined ur phone and you demand a new one. review their warranty, see if theyre allowed to do that.

actually it could be a couple different problems causing it not to work.

a reboot or restore can sometimes correct these issues. but if it got wet buy putting on the case you mentioned that could be it as well. but depending on how the screen protector works it could have put the button in a bind. but you can replace the home button but sometimes it is the dock connector is bad. water seems to have a big effect on them! if you send it out to be fixed it would be a $50 repair at most. you can get the aftermarket parts off ebay and fix it for about $20 yourself but if you have no experience then I would not suggest it because you will most likely cause more damage!

Just bend the Home Button prongs up a little bit

There can be two things, either the spray that you used had damaged the Flex Connector for Home Button or the liquid has caused some condensation on the contacts.

It is very simple to fix if it is just condensation. Just Hair Dry your iPhone @ moderate heat. If it works well & good. If not then take apart the iPhone, it is very simple, just remove two bottom screws & a suction cup. Look up some videos by ifixit.

Raise the prongs of Home button a little bit, do not raise too much otherwise you will break it.

Put it all back, it should work. If not then your Flex cable is damaged & that is a tricky repair, it is better idea to go to the professional.

Hi Guys.

I have a solution on how to fix the iphone home button.

It is really simple.

The same thing happened to me, the Home button stopped working, I did this and it worked. So I am not just spreading a false hope rumor, this is practical and directly worked for me.

HOLD THE HOME BUTTON AND POWER BUTTON FOR AROUND 10-20 SECONDS UNTIL IT RESETS ITSELF.

WHEN IT TURNS BACK ON LATER YOUR HOME BUTTON SHOULD WORK AGAIN.

Remember the iphone is little computer and needs to be restarted every now and again. Just like most apple and Microsoft computers, it is not just a phone and this may need to be done every few months, a quick restart.

If this does not work, then you have a real problem, take it back to your store and get a replacement. Hopefully you were smart and took out the insurance and this whole process should be very easy.

Please reply to this and let me know if it worked for anyone else.

I hope this helps, because the iphone has been keeping all my **** together since I got it.

Again, I hope this helps.

Jay

That would then be a software issue. Most of the time its a hardware issue.

For those people who have to press hard on the home button for it to register, i suggest you try my method first before you go and break the digitizer and and pry out the home button.

The way i fixed it was by adding tape to the back side of the ribbon with the copper that touches the board of the logic board. By applying tape to the back side, you're lifting up the ribbon so that it can contact the logic board, thus registering the home function when press.

lift the ribbon with a flat head or something flat so that it doesn't stick to the plastic.

it should be on the right side of the button. Gently lift up the ribbon so that it gives you room to add tape on the bottom(or something that lifts it up)

When this is accomplished make sure that the ribbon is still aligned so that it can connect to the logic board

the part that says "J3 >" is where the copper connector is going to touch.

after you have finish that, make sure to put the screen back and then test out your home button. If that doesn't work, then you can go ahead and buy a new home button.

toeme update

Comment toeme iphone fix:
In regards to the “toeme” iphone 3g home button repair. Placing a brass shim between home button and metal tab, as shown below, reduces the travel on the worn home button and gives a solid on/off action. Putting tape under ribbon cable as suggested by “toeme” will only help the contacts to press more firmly on the mother board and it will not improve the action of a worn home button.

i just registered just to respond to this type of conflict.

a few months ago, my sister's iphone 3gs had become unresponsive, home button/volume button. she went over to the "geniuses" to get it repaired, but they said they wont because the phone was "slightly separated" and that she had to pay for an entire new phone. when she got home, she told me to see what's wrong with it, and to fix it.

i unscrewed the two bottom screws, used a little suction cup to carefully lift up the lower part of the screen, then removed the three (3) ribbons that connect the screen to the phone. i took off the screen..... i stared at the lower part on the backing of the phone and started laughing my *** off. the lower ribbon labeled four (4) was disconnected. i reconnected the ribbon, out everything back together, and all worked.

i laughed and laughed just thinking....WTF spend money on a new phone when it was just a little separated ribbon from the circuit board. goes to show that them "geniuses" are very "smart"

Before taking your phone apart, can I suggest what I've just done - I tapped it a couple of times on my desk, and the home button seems to be as responsive as before. Obviously this wouldn't work if a contact has broken, but I'm guessing there was just some fluff in there as I keep it in my pocket most of the time. Hope this helps at least some people.

Holy crap! That worked. Thank you.

Maybe a silly question, but the connector that touches at J3. Are there supposed to be two pieces (connected to the Home button flex cable) touching there, or just one? On all pics of replacement flex cables, I see two connectors. On mine I just have one (the bottom one, touching J3 exactly).

Wow that worked lol!

As some people have said here, I think the liquid solution may have caused the problem. My suggestion is to turn off the iPhone immediately to avoid short circuiting. It is easier to replace the home button/front of the iPhone than to fry the whole thing and replace the more expensive internals. Also take note that the thickness of the screen protector may also affect your ability to press the home button as you would have before.

Sorry to bump and old thread, but I thought I'd share how i fixed this particular problem.

I had exactly the same problem. One of the little brass pointy contacts fell off and I can't find it anywhere inside the phone. There is still a flat contact point underneath, but it doesn't touch the opposite contact in the phone back since it's too short.

As a temporary fix, I rolled up a tiny piece of aluminum foil and left a little "tail" on it and used electrical tape to tape the tail to the the plastic next to the contact to hold the foil ball between the two flat contact points. I made the ball big enough to get "sandwiched" between the two flat points when the phone is put back together

Not the best fix, but it works! I only have a few months left on my stupid 3 year contract (Isn't Canada great!). Hopefully it holds out long enough until the iPhone 5 comes out!

iphone 3 home button not working solution

A solution i have found that has worked for 20 + people whos iphone home button doesn't work is to press on the screen to the left and up an inch or so from the home button. After that you should find your home button will go back to working just fine.

i have offered this help on another forum and have had heaps of positive response.

Good luck!:):):)
