iPhone 3G S week 40. I need a non tetherd jailbreak

It depends on which factory made the phone, different factories started using the new bootrom chips in different weeks.
+1... come on Venus, someone has started an equivilant of this thread every day since week 40
How do you get it changed? Got my new 3GS coming from Orange UK tomorrow. Dont mind having it teatered, always arond a USB point...

FWIW, I just picked up a 32gb 3Gs on 12/26 (Christmas present).
While the tethered jb was a bit of a pain while doing the restore on the new phone (for all the cydia apps that require a reboot instead of a respring), I personally don't think it's all that bad.
I rarely need to reboot. Haven't had to yet after finishing the restore. I usually use the SBSettings app to do a respring if I see memory getting low.
I'm probably a minority in that I don't try out a lot of different themes and or apps from Cydia. Once the phone is setup with the apps and theme that I use, I have a tendency to keep my phone setup static for weeks/months at a time (been using the Aquoah theme for example for over 2 years and still think it's one of the best).

I have a week "47" now, and my jailbreak is untethered. I had a legit reason to switch though.
When you get you phone replaced at an Apple store, you generally get a remanufactured phone. For now, most of these have the older bootrom as they are, of course, older phones which have been factory refreshed.
On a remanufactured phone, the serial number gives the date of remanufacturing, not the original build date.
Also, the 2nd character of the serial number is a letter instead of a number.
I hear that you dont need to restart very often. But sometimes if something goes wrong and your phone resets itself and trys to restart then you're stuck with a non usable iphone untill you get home.
I agree the Aquoha icons kick ass.
I've been thinking about doing an untethered jailbreak, even though I hate it...How often for you guys does the phone reset itself, say, by "accident"? Is there an app that will help you conserve your battery, and maybe disable getting text messages in addition to calls(like airplane mode)?
Wow I am confused.. I just got my iPhone 3gs 2 weeks ago and jailbroke it with blackra1n. Very easy to do and also a very quick process. I am able to turn my phone completely off and turn it back on with no issues. I still have everything the exact same way it was before (cydia, sbs settings, winterboard etc).

I just realized the same thing...my 3GS is week 41, so I've been assuming that it was a tethered JB. Accidentally rebooted the phone today and was surprised and pleased when it booted just fine without the tether. As someone above said, different factories must have builds that were slightly out of sync.

How do I check the week? I have had mine for 2 weeks? lol. Regardless, it must have a older boot rom cause I shut my phone on and off constantly without a computer.

Mine is definitely a tethered jailbreak....have to run Blackra!n each time I reboot. Oh well.
And, FWIW, ever since my 2G in Aug 07....I rarely have to reboot with day to day use. Sometimes I go weeks w/o a reboot (my wife and Dad go MONTHS w/o a reboot on their iPhones). Rebooting is 99.99% of the time (for me) because of an app requirement after install or removal (whether from Cydia or the App Store).
Restoring, OTOH, because of POS programming (usually a Cydia app) that results in a lockup (or whatever), is more common. Have had it happen a few times, and that's the reason I really read a lot about an app first, and make sure that it's entirely useful to how I use my iPhone, before I will install it.
SBSettings... i use it to turn brightness down/flight mode on at night time when im just listening to music, then just turn it on again first thing in the morning. it also has a free memory feature, but never really used it, i have an app for that (which was later taken away from app store)
Just hitting the sleep button is not powering off your phone. Can you hold down the sleep button for three seconds, then "Slide to power off" without problems rebooting?
To answer your question: the fourth and fifth digits of your serial are the week of manufacture for your phone. Mine's 30.
Well then I guess mine is week 41. And trust me, I know what the difference is between putting my phone to "sleep" and turning it "off" is. When Im about to go into a meeting or conference call, even the vibrate can get annoying so I simply shut the phone off. Which is "slide to power off".
So far I have done it 3 time since I re-jailbroke with zero problems. I had to re-jailbrake cause something was causing my phone to die rapidly. Could be cause I restored it from my ipod settings, who knows. But doing the restore and starting from scratch has solved all the issues..

i badly need to unlock.. couldn't really care too much about jailbreak but it would be an added extra i suppose...
I attempted to use blackra1n and it worked up until the point where geohot's image appears on the phone and on the screen (mbp aluminum late 2008 running leopard) the phone then entered recovery mode (itunes logo with usb pointing towards it) so as a worried first time user of a phone which 600 was shelled out to purchase i got worried straight away and restored via itunes... it's all working now
can anyone tell me is there something i'm doing wrong personally or is it something to do with bootloader versions or something??
any help would be GREATLY appreciated...
