I got my first iphone from o2 in ireland as a christmas present just over 1 week ago now...

It's a 3gs with baseband 05.11.07
firmware 3.1.2
week no.45

i badly need to unlock.. couldn't really care too much about jailbreak but it would be an added extra i suppose...

I attempted to use blackra1n and it worked up until the point where geohot's image appears on the phone and on the screen (mbp aluminum late 2008 running leopard) the phone then entered recovery mode (itunes logo with usb pointing towards it) so as a worried first time user of a phone which €600 was shelled out to purchase i got worried straight away and restored via itunes... it's all working now

can anyone tell me is there something i'm doing wrong personally or is it something to do with bootloader versions or something??

any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

Thanks

the point where it states 'restore with itunes' run blackrain again.

Your doing it correctly, however as your iphone is so new, it can only be jailbroken teathered, which means everytime the device is turned off and on again, you have to run blackrain to bypass the reconnect to itunes stuff...

You can unlock via blacksnow once blackrain is installed. Its a pain and there is no other way on new phones.

You're not doing anything wrong. :)

You're iPhone has the new iBoot and the jailbreak is tethered. Unfortunately, you first need to jailbreak before you unlock. This means that every time you shut the phone down, you'll need to run blackra1n to boot it.

If possible, could you return the iPhone and purchase a refurb instead? It's believe that refurbs most likely have the older iBoot version capable of an untethered jailbreak.

If you absolutely want an untethered jailbreak; get the phone changed. Most of the changed ones are the old boot version. I'm week 45 with untethered jailbreak. just fyi

There it goes. I had the same crack appear on top of the headphone and took it down to apple. They switched it but this time I didn't get lucky. It is a tethered jailbreak now. :( Hope something comes out soon, but in all reality its not really that of a big deal. Just have to be careful not to try out new cydia moves on Road :p

ahhhh... it makes a bit of sense now..
i completely understood the concept of a tethered jailbreak yet only now applied that to having to do it twice with the new ones..
So once i get to the 'connect to itunes' screen should i just close blackra1n and open it up again (then click 'make it rain'... again?)
to be honest i considered doing that first time round but i kind of (for lack of a better expression) **** my pants once i saw that recovery mode screen...

I know it can never be 100% but if i do it again and if it f**ks up will i still be able to rely on the restore via itunes option? So basically i'm asking.. using blackra1n.. what's the likeliness of me completely bricking the phone?? (i'm hoping you say it's VERY minimal)

I don't really mind the whole having to reboot via my computer thing... it's rare that i'm not around a point to charge my phone when it's down to 10% battery/in desperate need to charge it (as i do have to run off two phones being on a UK and Irish number all the time anyway)

Also two things:
1.Should i wait for the next apple announcement later this month to see if they're releasing a new firmware... version 4.0 maybe(keeping in mind this will almost definitely involve waiting for a new jailbreak/unlock option)? and also maybe wait for o2 ireland to support unlocking (as o2 uk started doing once the phone stopped being exclusive to them (this which is only around the proverbial corner for o2 ireland))
2.I've read on a few forums that once the blackra1n jailbreak has been performed that people have had problems with wifi coverage aswell as some people complaining about dropped calls in general?!? ... do you guys have any experience of this at all?

to answer your question about purchasing a refurb... once i was told by o2 that i probably couldn't use an o2 uk sim card on my phone i asked the customer assistant whether it would be a more feasible idea for me to return the phone and purchase a UK iphone he responded with 'to be honest, now that there's proof that you've used the phone without any immediate issues, there's no chance of any refunds'

As you can tell i'm quite touchy about jailbreaking such an expensive piece of kit considering the risk of being left staring at a (once beautiful) €600 paperweight at the end of the day.... The two of you responding so quickly, informatively and promptly (bytethese and Deano.UK) has honestly brought me to an epiphany that internet forums have the potential to create an extremely positive outcome.. something that i never believed before so props to you two for that alone...

yet again... any (more) help would be greatly appreciated..

Cheers,
Nish

Yep :)

Ive never heard of any blackra1n messing up a phone from the multiple forums i read/post in, and have used it several times my self. I (along with a very large jail-breaking community) have alot of faith in using it.

I would scrap waiting for 4.0 - last year they announced 3.0 in march, released the SDK for developers to program for, then released it to consumers in July when the new iphone 3gs came out... if 4.0 gets announced at the end of jan, it will be a few months before we get to see it on the iphones as a consumer. You can wait for o2 Ireland to do official unlocks, but there is no guarantee how long that will be.

personally i couldnt live without my jailbreak, has made the phone the best phone i have ever had.

I have a 3g model, and should be getting a 3gs today or tomorrow... the whole tethered thing i can live with. as i have usb in my car and at work.

I was a bit worried about doing it about 6 months ago for the first time... which was alot harder and longer process then using blackra1n.

Just run it twice, then on your phone you'll see a blackra1n app, run that and install a program called snow. that will be your phone unlocked. if you want to have the ability to install jailbroken apps, install cydia, which is like the app store.

if it all works ok for you... buy me a pint of Guinness next time im in Ireland! :D

I have never heard of an iPhone being bricked by a modern jailbreak. Ever. I do not think it is possible (nor, I will add, does Geohot) to brick an iPhone.

It's just a spammer wanting YouTube hits.

too true, but after watching the video i do have a better idea of how to jailbreak without blackra1n...

Just wondering.. If you download an ipsw to use with pwnage tool, what does it contain? as in.. does using pwnage tool de-sync the phone with itunes (i.e. erase all contacts/media/apps)

Also, in regards to jailbreak and unlock with blackra1n.. is it true that it can result in dropped calls/imei blocking on certain towers..?

I am currently still trying to pluck up the courage to do it...

just got my new 3gs today... heres what i done.
  1. Plugged in via usb
  2. Ran blackra1n
  3. Ran blackra1n again
  4. opened blackra1n app on my iphone
  5. installed cydia
  6. opened blackra1n app again on iphone
  7. installed sn0w
  8. put my o2 sim card in (its an orange phone)
  9. sync'ed apps/music via itunes

SIMPLES :)

why do you even have a forum? if you dog anyone who is wanting to
help

i guess i made a bad choice to join the forum

:apple: By the way you open pwnage tool for mac and select the ipsw and it makes a custom ipsw that allows you to select if you want cydia or icy on your phone and then it allows you to choose what packages you want also the repo's if you want add any so when you restore they will already be installed therefore you can reboot or restart without having to have a usb port near by. (But forget i tried to help cause i am a spammer!) :apple:
oh the ipsw can even come from itunes you just need to have one for the restore

awesome..
just jailbroke a couple of hours ago with blackra1n... so happy :)

only thing is... what's the story with syncing music and stuff now? Does it all work as normal?

Just a little update...

Day 2 of owning a jailbroken/unlocked iphone (3.1.2,05.11.07,3gS)

After installing random cydia applications i've decided that having to reboot paired with a tethered jailbreak is just not a pleasant thing...

The first time i rebooted (just to see what a tethered jailbreak involved) i lost my Wifi... reset the settings and had to reboot (make it rain) again.. still no wifi :(

did it again.. success... wifi..

went out and bought a new sim card from o2 UK for my newly acquired ability to launch any simcard into my phone... worked perfectly switching between 3g and wifi and all else.. then got a prompt from cydia to reboot due to winterboard malfunctioning...

BOOM - problems..
wifi disapperead once again after reboot...
had to do it again (as in reboot and blackra1n twice)

then once i regained wifi.. no 3g...
after switching on and off 3g several times and trying different things i rebooted twice again... wifi yes, 3g no "not subscribed to a cellular data plan" or something kept creeping up in safari..

went onto o2 uk website and noticed a discrepancy in the cellular data settings... changed them to what it said.. switched on and off 3g... all is good AT THE MOMENT...

Warning to all those who are looking to perform a tethered jailbreak... you're in for one hell of a journey..

and to think, i'm only on day 2...

It's funny the way the pupil becomes the master so quickly...
My flatmate just today bought a 3g iphone locked to orange after me smugly showing him mine which was unlocked and accepted his simcard..
he then ran to a second hand store and picked one up... happy as larry he is.. until his (less tech-savvy and forum-trustworthy than mine) hands encounter a problem..

Lucky bugger doesn't have to deal with the tether thing though so he's probably fine for a good while :(

Well then I guess mine is week 41. And trust me, I know what the difference is between putting my phone to "sleep" and turning it "off" is. When Im about to go into a meeting or conference call, even the vibrate can get annoying so I simply shut the phone off. Which is "slide to power off".
So far I have done it 3 time since I re-jailbroke with zero problems. I had to re-jailbrake cause something was causing my phone to die rapidly. Could be cause I restored it from my ipod settings, who knows. But doing the restore and starting from scratch has solved all the issues..

You do know that you can actually put your phone into silent mode WITHOUT ringing and vibrating right?

Sorry if this is a stupid question since I never jailbroke a 3GS before. This is going to be done for a friend of mines and i want to make sure about the week stuff before I attempt it.

First of all, How do I find out what week it was made? So that I can determine whether it is a tethered or untethered jailbreak before I proceed.

Thanks in advance

-Tony

you can find this in settings->general->about
