Yes we all know this but the main purpose of having a 3G iPhone is the 3G network. Sure the 3G has gps (sort of) which the first gen. does not but why fork out a good deal of money for the 3G, plus sign the contract then break the contract, pay the fee's, and loose the highspeed service for 30 or 40 a month. To me this is just silly when you could have purchased a 2.5 iPhone for less money and no AT&T contract in the first place and be on T-Moblie. Not the brightest idea in my opinion but to each their own.

My situation is that I traded my 16gb ipod touch for on iphone on craigslist and didn't find out til the day of the trade that it was an iPhone 3G, that is why a software unlock is so important to me, so I don't have to use the unreliable sim unlocks anymore. Not all of us signed up for an AT&T contract and then canceled it. Many of us came upon our iPhones by others means. ;)

I'm in the UK

I am waiting for the unlock for the 3g. I bought mine on Pay as you go here, its the 16gig.

I'm going to put it on voda because my deal with them is far better than anything 02 can offer.

does anyone know if it will work with the uk voda 3g network?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeah right.. because ONLY americans actually go buy iphones nowadays.

As someone said already, the most common reason to unlock is for travelling abroad.. buy a local sim card and get a local number thus avoiding roaming rip-offs

I've been outside of the US for over three months now and I'm leaving on Jan 13th. Too bad it couldn't have come out sooner, but at least I get to have some fun for 13 days, haha.
