I guess you have a stick up your arse pretty far and can't see what I am saying.

If there is software unlock, you will read about it before you would need to google a website that claims they can do it.

As for using another sim card, I have always been able to put in any sim card into the 3G phone without itune activation. Not sure what sim card or what 3G phone you been using.

I am simply saying this, quit wasting time with these garbage sites, and if there is software unlock, you will read about it on the front page of MacRumors.

There is no validity to their claim. All you are doing is jailbreaking your iPhone which will allow you to use ANY AT&T SIM card without having to activate. The iPhone Dev Team had this done almost 2 months ago (as in right after the iPhone 3G was released). Try putting a T-Moblie SIM card in your iPhone 3G and see what happens.

Clearly you have no understanding of what unlocking means so quit posting on a subject you just don't understand. Until you can prove it's unlocked by trying another carriers SIM and posting screen shots proving it YOU have absolutely nothing to contribute to this thread.

Yes, we all know it doesn't. That fact has been established and has been confirmed by someone who actually went through this process. Nobody in this thread has claimed it unlocks the phone and allows you to use any non-AT&T SIMs.

All you are doing is jailbreaking your iPhone which will allow you to use an AT&T SIM card without having to activate. The iPhone Dev Team had this done almost 2 months ago (as in right after the iPhone 3G was released).

This is where there is some confusion. Even after jailbreaking my phone, I still had the invalid SIM error when switching between AT&T SIMs. However, if as you say, SIM swapping has only been possible for the last 2 months, then that may explain the confusion. When I first jailbroke the 3g, I couldn't swap. The same was true with the 2g prior to unlocking. This might be the only useful information out of the last dozen posts.

Clearly you have no understanding of what unlocking means so quit posting on a subject you just don't understand.

I'm posting on this subject because the OP wanted to know if anyone had tried this method. I have tried it and posted my results. I know exactly what unlocking and jailbreaking involves. I have been doing it for many years starting with an old Motorola brick from the early 90s.

As you are such an expert on the subject of iPhone unlocking, perhaps you can explain the purpose of the extra file in the "Device Support" directory?

I'm going to try upgrading to 2.0.2 now and see if it remains unlocked.

As for your problems with the unauthorized SIM, I don't know what to tell you as many have jailbroken their iPhones (both 1st gen and 3G) and been able to use other AT&T SIMS without having to activate. Why you were not able to do so is beyond me.

1. AT&T does not offer insurance on the iPhone. Trust me, I got 12 letters from the insurance provider Assurion advising me that they do not cover the iPhone and the insurance was canceled.

2. Yes. If you do not report the phone stolen so that AT&T can lock the SIM card it can be used. Furthermore, the person the found it can just get their own SIM card and put it into the iPhone and activate service on the new SIM card. You won't get charged for their calls but the iPhone is definitely usable. There are rumors that if you get a police report AT&T may lock the imei number so that it can't be used but there is nothing confirmed on this.

The only advice anyone can give you is to be aware of your surroundings and don't leave your iPhone in a position where it can get stolen.

FYI, State Farm offers insurance for iPhone or other similar item as part of their Personal Article policy. $30 or so a year would give you protection for your phone.
