My screen just cracked. I was just wondering, how much do I have to pay to get it fixed/replaced? If they replace it, will it be a refurbished or brand new? What exactly is the refurbished one?

:( Sorry to hear that my friend.

Since you have a 3GS it will still be under warranty so I assume Apple will simply swap your unit for a refurbished "white box" iPhone 3GS.

I think it'll be hard to argue that the screen cracked without any external forces acting on it, so it probably won't be covered under warranty...

Ah that's right, did Apple not respond to the claims of iPhone's screens cracking by saying there "must have been an external force applied" to cause the damage?

It wasn't too long ago either if I remember.

$200 from Apple. It isn't the oleophobic screen either. They say it is, but mine sure as hell isn't.

Thanks guys for all the sympathy:)
what'd you do to it?

Actually, i pulled it out to check the time and my friend whipped his bag at me. It went FLYING! And he's agreed to pay for it.

So how much will the replacement (not just the screen, cuz the bezel and back are a bit scratched) be from apple, and is it refurbished?

Thabends is right: $200 - it will be a "refurbished" unit, but chances are you will get a new one. They dont have enough refurbs yet to cover the need for replacements. When you go to the store they will give you just a replacement iPhone - swap out your SIM card and take your $200. Say goodbye to your 1 year warranty - refurbs are warranted for 3 months.

3 months or the remaining duration of your original warranty, whichever is the longer.

Does it matter HOW the screen is cracked? Cuz some part of the top left corner is coming out and i can see the chip inside. Does that count as the screen?

BTW im in canada so is it still $200?

It doesn't matter. If there is damage then it is not covered by warranty.

This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (b) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (c) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (d) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”); (e) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; (f ) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (g) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic on ports; or (h) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced.

$229CDN in Canada.

Refurb if they have any or new if they don't. It just depends on whether they've received refurbs to hand out, how's anyone to know really? However, since the phone has only been out a few months there's a reasonable chance it will be new.

Reminds me of the girl with braces from finding nemo

haha he doesn't look like that in real life, it was a bad shot:D

My other friend cracked his screen and they gave him a new phone (not sure if it was refurb, but it was a 3G so it probably was) for free. Is this one of those Apple stories I always hear that they feel sorry for you or something and they replace it for free, stating that its a 'one time deal'?

No way apple is going to think that just happened.

A slight hairline crack and maybe
