Hi, I can 100% confirm this is a hardware issue but not in the faulty sense, more of a maintenance issue!
The noise cancelling mic on the top (next to the audio jack) just needs cleaning out, probably due to too much hair products
The best way to do this is by cutting a nylon bristle from a cleaning brush and inserting it a few times in the very small hole at the top.
It may need a few goes but will eventually go in about 5mm.
The bristle is rigid enough to clear the blockage but soft enough not to damage the mic.
I tried compressed air first time round with a very small improvement, this bristle trick brought the mic back to life!
Worth a go before you head to the apple store.

Edit:
should of scrolled to the end of this thread before posting solution lol, at least i can confirm with the others lol :p

This Method WORKED LIKE A CHARM THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!:D

Same problem

I have tried using a pin as well as using a bristle from a cleaning brush and neither have worked. Is has only started happening since I updated to ios 5.1.1
do you think that could be the problem?
PLEASE HELPPPPP! :(

Had the same problem and the needle cleaning the small microphone pin hole worked!!!!

same problem

I have the same problem, I've tried to clean the tiny mic, but it didn't work. Anybody knows how deep the pin can go, currently it barely goes about 2mm not deeper than that, is it clogged?

speakerphone mic not working :[

My speakerphone mic isn't working either :[ It doesn't work on speakerphone or when I record a video, but I can make a regular call just fine. I tried cleaning it with the bristle and a staple...but both haven't worked! I'm on the latest update (iOS 6.0.1), could this be related or is there a physical problem with my phone? :[

Same Problem - Resolved!

I had the same exact problem ... the mic would not pick up (or barely pick up) my voice when on speakerphone and video recording.

I took a single bristle from a toothbrush and shoved it down in the hole on the top by the earplug ... and BAM!

I thought that I might have had a faulty phone, but it was likely pocket lint or something.

Cheers!

Brand New

Has anyone ever had this issue with a Brand New iPhone 4?

I just got one from the AT&T store, and it had this issue. The store restored it, and that didn't work. I tried cleaning it, and that didn't work. I'm going to head to the Apple Store next. They'll probably be mad I'm not already using iPhone 5.

Hi all

I got the same issue with my iphone 4. Running on ios 6.1 and tried the needle and the bristle. No luck. Any more suggestions as i cant take it back to apple because i dont have warantee and i dont want to pay £126 to get it replaced

Speakerphone=No Mic.

Okay, I just wanted to thank all of you who took the time to share the answer to this puzzling situation. I was using the speakerphone on my 4S iPhone yesterday afternoon. Last night I dropped the phone in a pile of leaves and when I tried to use the speakerphone option later that night, the person on the other end could not hear me. I know the drop wasn't that concussive, so I was wondering if it was a software/hardware issue.

So I looked here. after following your comments, I found the hole on top of my phone and cleared it out with the head of a needle. Works like a charm again.

Guess that iPhone 5 isn't quite in my future yet....

iPhone 4 Microphone not working

When using the speaker phone on my iPhone 4s, callers would tell me that my voice was not clear: cutting out, garbled, muffled, etc... I tried clearing out the tiny pin-hole mic next to the headphone jack with a pin, as suggested above, and it seems to have worked. Thanks!

Hi ive had my iphone 4s since mid 2012. Its had a problem with using the phone on speaker, recording video with sound and doing video conferences without the headphones plugged in. I can do a voice memo fine, and have tried the microphone cleaning trick. The sound that does record when in video recording mode sounds like a miniature motor or something. Very faint and distorted.

The phone was restored when i got it from the settings from iphone 4. Have not tried a software reset yet, has anyone successfully resolved the problem without cleaning the mic? Why are the phones doing it anyway?

I did take it to the apple store and the clerk tried the video and sound seemed to record when she did it. Confused what to do next.

Apple, if your listening, why did you release a buggy product?

Solution!

I fixed this problem with my iPhone 4S by taking a needle and cleaning out the little hole on top of the phone next to the headphone jack. I also cleaned the bottom speakers but I don't think that was the issue. Hope it helps! :)

If its under warranty. It's not too hard to get it replaced after ruling out software. Restore the phone back to factory and if the problem still exists and assuming that there's no accidental damage then Apple will replace the phone.

Fixed for me too!

My wife's iPhone 4 had been experiencing the same no-microphone while on speakerphone issue, and the needle in the small mic at the top did the trick.

Interestingly, she also had the opposite problem when speaking on the phone normally; the bottom mic worked fine but she couldn't hear the other party well at all. I figured I'd scrape the earpiece with a needle while I was at it, and I cleared out a lot of crud. Now that function is back!

I guess it should be common sense, but Apple should recommend regular cleaning every few months.

CONFIRM! Regular mic worked fine, speakerphone mic didn't (nobody could hear, although I could hear them fine) Took to Genius Bar, they couldn't diagnose or fix, except to sell replacement (phone out of warranty.)

Looked down into speakerphone mic (tiny hole next to earphone jack) and saw something, tried to dislodge with a sewing needle, but it was too fat (thank goodness, I realized after that shoving a metal object down there would have ruined the mic for sure.)

Saw this thread, snipped a single brush hair from a paintbrush, danced it down the hole about 1/4" a couple times, voila, speakerphone mic works great! I didn't see anything "come out", so presumably there's still some crud down there, but I have returned a non-functioning speakerphone to life, at least for now.

Speaker phone mic not working

Used a soft bristle tooth brush to clean the lint (or whatever) out of the small speakerphone mic just to the side of the headphone jack. Works great now. Thanks to all for the tip.

Mechanical Fix.

For those of you where the 'stick something down the speakerphone mic hole' didn't work, as it didn't on mine, most likely, it is a mechanical problem. If the speakerphone mic becomes detached for some reason, the mic will not work and the symptoms are exackly as described here in this thread. Mic doesn't function with speakerphone on, motor boat sound in videos.

My speakerphone mic stopped working after I replaced the earphone jack in my 4s. The speakerphone mic is part of the earphone jack assembly, and I noticed while removing the defective earphone jack, that the speakerphone mic was tightly glued to the little black housing (sound amplifying chamber?) above it. After the replacement, the mic was no longer tight up against the black housing.

After wedging a piece of plastic behind the mic to get it seated tight up against the black housing, it came back to life. See attached picture for reference.

This fix does require removing two very small screw inside the phone next to the mic, so good luck if you do this.
