You think of the times when Apple unveiled a new hardware visual design:

--iPhone 3G
--iPhone 4
--iPhone 5 (kinda)
--iPhone 5c
--iPhone 6/plus
--iPhone X
--iPhone XR
--iPhone 12/mini/pro

I mean, was there any that smashed the mold like the iPhone 4?

Not a fan of the 4/4s, never been a fan, never will be a fan. I purposely waited an entire year to upgrade my HTC Touch Pro so I could get the iPhone 5.

The 5 with black sides, thinner than the 4/4s and larger. Black/Slate. The 5 did not have the fugly stainless steel band, nor did it have the glass back that people seemed to always be shattering.

And don't get me started on how awful the 4/4s looked when people started using bumpers!

For all that though, I do own a 4 and a 4s. Total paid for both was $45, one bought as my son's first iPhone (which we upgraded a year later) and one with a flaky home button from a guy on Reddit.

I keep them because they have their uses - just not ever as my primary iPhone.

I was a die hard Nokia fan… I vowed not to switch to iPhone, I really disliked the design when it was announced in 2007 and I was happy with the Nokia s60 smartphones.
Forward a few years and Nokia at the time was dying and I knew I needed to jump ship to a new smartphone platform, I’d tried a HTC Diamond running Windows among others (HTC Desire I think) but disliked them, then as soon as I seen the iPhone 4 announcement I was wowed at the design, let’s face it, it was a beautiful device, so I picked up an iPhone 4 and loved the UI, the design, everything about it really and I’ve not looked back since.

Adam.

I laughed because I COMPLETELY forgot about the bumpers!!!

I have my wife's old iPhone 4. Works great, but it is a bit laggy on iOS 7. I've had a 3GS, a 5, a 6S, a 7 plus, and a 11, before I got my 13 mini a couple of weeks ago. Reminds me a lot of the 4 and 5.

iPhone 4's definitely had a reputation for smashing lol. But I would argue the 6 and 6 Plus had a pretty big impact too, people were desperate for bigger phones.

I was on the “S” cycle back then so I had the 4S but not the 4. I love the look and feel but definitely loved Siri. I know it was a first attempt but I just thought it was so futuristic

Ah good times. I had a 4 and a 5 before my 6S. Liked the squared design way more so I waited until the 12 Mini to upgrade again.

I was using HTC phones mostly until iphone 4. I have been using iphone since. iphone 4 was the most beautiful phone at the time. I don't like curve edge iphone starting with iphone 6. I am happy with iphone 14 (upgraded from iphone 7) with square edge like iphone 4.

Apple even offered people free bumpers though, because of the antenna issues.
I got a black bumper for my iphone 4 (free from Apple).

iphone 4 was my first iphone. Before that I had an ipod touch and after seeing how nice the iphone 4 was I switched over to iphone.

Remember that like it was yesterday. Such a disaster release. Tested it myself and as soon as you touch that spot, reception dies. Terrible. They caught a lot of **** for it too.

I think the iPhone 4 changed my perception of a smartphone. Up until that time, phones were just throwaway devices and not fashion accessories or works of art. I didn’t have the cash for one on release but my then girlfriend had a 4 and I remember being blown away at being able to play games such as Monkey Island: Special Edition on a tiny mobile device. The internet browsing and video streaming experience was far superior than anything I had previously used and was a huge step up from Blackberry and Nokia in terms of raw power output.

Good memories!

I actually had the Siri app on my iPhone 3GS, before they were bought out by Apple.

*rolls eyes* But you were all holding it wrong!

I had a 4S, the issue was fixed by then. :)

LOL! Take this post, flip it around, and you've got me! Loved my 4S, thought the stainless steel band and the glass back were cool, really liked bumpers, didn't care for the ultra-thinness (and ultra-light-weightedness) of the 5. For all that, though, did get an iPhone SE 2016.

Everyone has their favorites, so that's cool. I could not go back to my own iPhone 5 as a primary phone now though. Once I got a 6+, the size made it a point of no return. I have the 11PM now as my primary phone.

My son's first new iPhone was the SE 2016 and he was using that until we got him the SE 2020 last year.
