At the iPhone hacks section.
nothing like a little false advertising

HSPA!=4g

Technically I think they can do it cause HSPA+ is considered 4G by some.
But IMO it should be something like H+ or 3G+ since most of these HSPA+ enabled areas dont have the backhaul updated to support speeds up to 14.4mbps.
Some still get 1-2Mbps down and in congested areas like NY even slower.

Update your apps. :)

And answer your damn phone once in awhile.

Check your email! :)

Ahhh...Theres the posts I was waiting for.:D

Something is up with my exchange account. All those emails are work emails that have been read. It used to take them off my phone as I opened them in my office. Any suggesstions?

If I miss a call I usually just call the person back rather then listen to the voicemail even if I see they leave a message...But then I won't clear my voicemails for 2 or 3 days.

Apps is because I did a tethered itunes backup of my iPad 2 before I sold it last night. At the same time my iPad was backing up, my iphone was showing as connected in iTunes. It started syncing old, unchecked apps somehow. Not sure what caused it or why. But I have about 50 apps that shouldn't be there...5 or so most likely have to be updated.

I just had to laugh. I knew from the second I posted the pic, that most replys, if not all of them would be about my notifications. You guys are so predictible. ;)

Evolved High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+)

Main article: Evolved HSPA
Evolved HSPA (also known as: HSPA Evolution, HSPA+) is a wireless broadband standard defined in 3GPP release 7 and 8 of the WCDMA specification. Evolved HSPA provides data rates up to 84 Mbit/s in the downlink and 22 Mbit/s in the uplink (per 5*MHz carrier) with multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technologies and higher order modulation. On 21 July 2010, T-Mobile USA announced HSPA+ service to 50 markets with plans to increase this to 100 markets (185 million people) by the end of the year

From Cult of Mac:

Our awesome Twitter follower*@presstopher*was one of the first to get iOS 5.1 downloaded on his iPhone and noticed an odd update – his AT&T iPhone 4S (that runs on the 3G network) is now lying, claiming that it is running on a 4G network. iOS 5.1 changes AT&T iPhone 4S to show that they are using a 4G network. It’s complete ******** and we’re stunned that Apple and AT&T have made this move.

When the iPhone 4S was announced Apple never claimed it was a 4G device. The most Tim Cook said was that “our competitors call this 4G. We won’t argue with him.” He knew the iPhone 4S’s ability to tap into AT&T’s HSPA+ network wasn’t 4G, it was just super-amped 3G,

LTE and WiMax? Those are 4G. But the iPhone 4S isn’t running on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, nor is it capable of straddling the 4G cables of AT&T’s LTE network. It’s a 3G HSPA+ device. Apple currently only has one 4G LTE device: the new iPad.

Now Apple has a real 4G device, and what do they do? Cheapen the term by rolling it back and appluing it to AT&T’s HSPA+ network, something they had too much dignity to do before. It’s a marketing point indicating Apple’s feeling the crush — real or psychological — of competitors laughing that the iPhone 4S isn’t 4G, even now.

Ummm, Apple, you don’t need to have our software tell us our new iPhone 4S’s are 4G. We know they’re not and we’re ok with it. As much as AT&T and T-Mobile want to claim that their HSPA+ networks are 4G, they’re really not. We can wait for the iPhone 5 to have a true 4G iPhone. No need to diminish the jump to LTE with a lie.

Seems like a cheap move from Apple. Now we have to argue with members that it's not actually 4g....lol

So, since it says 4G now; do those with the unlimited plan get capped at 5gb instead of 3gb??

Just because the iPhone 4S now displays a "4G" doesn't mean it's a 4G phone. Technically it's still 3G but at a higher speed. So technically those with unlimited data plan (grandfathered) is still capped at 3 GB.

Hmm.

While I would have preferred 3G+, I gotta say this is better than nothing. At least I can identify which areas are different. I know I don't have LTE, so no big deal.

This WILL suck for the next iPhone, though. Then we'll have 3 levels of speed on AT&T but only 2 visual indicators. (Unless they put LTE 4G up there, but, ugh.)
On LTE phones, AT&T has decided to use the 4G LTE indicator.

Apple should have done what Motorola did and slapped an H+ up there.

The 4G indicator is so distracting! Every time I look at my phone my eyes are drawn to the 4.

I wouldn't care if AT&T users got even close to Verizon's LTE speed. I'd just call it different tech that does the same thing. But even it's max (which no one gets) is slower then I'll see on actual 4G.

I don't know guys. Even though you say its a display change I'm getting 10 mbps downloads. I have NEVER gotten that speed on my 4S until today.

Any idea if this is AT&T only or will it work with hspa+ carriers outside of the US?

I found a strange bug in iOS 5.1 on my iPhone 4S. Next to signal strength, it now says...drumroll please..."4G"!!! Anyone else have this bug? I got excited for a second!

I guess it's not a bug, I found this:

What do you guys think of this? I think its pretty dumb to try and pass the 4S off as a 4G phone
