Try downloading and installing icleaner, run it and it should clean out the temporary files

I'm really wondering if there's a way to "trick" my phone into displaying SMS messages. For example, making it think it has more memory available somehow by rewriting something with root access.

Anyone have any ideas?

you could try browsing to var/mobile/Library/SMS and delete everything inside that folder

then reboot and see if you are able to receive SMS. note that this will delete ALL your message history

I think he said he already used it.
Not sure what else could be done besides darricksailo's suggestion above.
If not then semirestore or ilexrat would be the only option.
Yes you will have to spend some time setting everything up again but next time try deleting texts messages and don't let them accumulate for years and using up all your available storage.

i think this is a good idea, i remember i read somewhere about apple sms and mms messages not really deleting, like it will accumulate in your phone regardless of deleting messages in the sms app

Yea I think there was a bug in an earlier ios version where attachments weren't deleting correctly. Can't remember for sure and can't remember is it was 6.x or 7.x.

Someone else might have a better idea about this.

It was fixed in iOS 6.1

It was a bug in the early iOS 6 days and fixed in 6.1. I don't think it exists in iOS 7 (which is irrelevant to the OP)

I will try this. However, are there things I can selectively delete? I don't want to delete everything if I don't have to.

So any luck???? I have same issue and it's driving me nuts. This is a backup phone and this issue shouldn't be there for 6.1, it was an issue in ios 5. I think it happened after I dropped my phone once, but prob coincidence on that.

Fortunately, I haven't encountered this issue

Did you try deleting everything inside the SMS folder and reboot?
