Only if you download faster than the hardware can write it to flash. Which is nobody.

That's not how the updates work.

There's two parts:

1) The device downloads the IPA (a zip file).

2) The device then extracts the IPA.

Both 64GB and 256GB devices will do #1 the same. The 256GB device will do #2 faster.

I wonder why the difference in speed. Does Apple actually use slower chips on the lower storage tier, or does the higher storage tier have some sort of “RAID-0” like setup/data channels? Seriously asking out of curiousity.

It works more like a RAID0.

In order for raid 0 to work you need multiple disks and a RAID controller - Data is stripped across multiple disks in order to increase I/O performance. I used to have my home desktops set up as RAID0 before the days of when SSD's were mainstream in order to increase performance, but I haven't bothered since I installed SSDs a few years ago because its not really needed due to the breakneck speeds you get with SSD's.

Can you please provide a link to some hard proof to indicate the iphones are set up as RAID0 lol

Higher storage usually means more parallel chips. Usually double the storage, doubles the write speed. i.e. "NAND controllers" are basicly "raid controllers", each NAND chip gets a bit of the data, the more chips you have, the faster the storage will be (assuming the same type of NAND chip).

If you have 8x8bit NAND, the controller can write 8 bytes in one single go (sequential). If you only have 4x8bit NAND (half the storage), the operation will be twice as slow, as the controller needs to write twice to each NAND chip.

NAND controllers are not basically RAID controllers, two are very different, but I do understand why you made the comparison.

As well you should. Now please follow sir brad, he's going to give you a private tour of the pit of misery! 64GB Heathen...pfft! As person number 5 out of 50 @ wally world I had to make the easy choice of white 64GB or black 256GB. Although I only use 30GB on the old Plus, I can't handle the contrast of black and white...too distracting. I could return it for the 64GB when they have stock, but I don't think I will...more on that in a bit.

...I highly doubt that there would be a statistically significant difference between the 64GB and 256GB this year...
I'm not mr money pants, so I don't have an 8 64 and an 8 256, but here's what I noticed between the 6S Plus and 8 Plus:

6S Plus restore time ~ 20+ minutes
8 Plus restore time ~ 6 minutes

How much of that's the storage and how much is the old Plus, I don't know. I do know that I won't be doing that all the time. But I'm also free to pack in the last week's 12 NFL games and a ridiculous amount of media without feeling stressed or limited. I'm not 100% I'll keep it, but it IS only $6.66 extra a month, but what child didn't want be Darth Vader when they all growed up?

If you read just a few lines up, the difference between 64 6S Plus and 8 Plus doing a restore shocked me. The 6S Plus likes to tell me 7 minutes, but then take triple that. The 8 Plus told 6 minutes and was done in 6 minutes. I appreciate that kind of honestly in a phone...like a loyal dog.

I would really like to see a detailed comparison of actual usage scenarios between sizes, ie moving gigs of files to an fro, updates, backups, restores, installs, etc.

Sooooo, maybe someone will do a new one for Xs, Xs MAX and Xr?
Here are the results for Xs MAX 256GB Performancetest Mobile.

Write 599MB/s
Read 1685MB/s

Device filled to 100GB before test. Good speed =)

No need to repeat the test for 256GB.

Someone needs to run the test for the 64GB and 512GB.
