iPhone 8 or wait?

I was planning on replacing my iPhone this year as I have an iPhone 6. Currently I'm not having any problems with the 6 so it is not a case of outright failure that was making me look at upgrading.

Usually I try to buy the best version of a phone available, figuring it will hold value and usefulness for the longest time. But this year that means a $1000.00 plus phone cost.

I have read that Apple plans on having every phone in 2018 be an OLED phone, and that the manufacturing costs will also be going down. So potentially, a 2018 iPhone 9 will be significantly cheaper with one more year of new features than the iPhone 8 and the 9 could cost less money, or get a much more powerful phone/memory/features for the same cost. My iPhone 6 will still run IOS 11, and as I said, I'm not having any problems with it and usually there isn't that big of an improvement from one year to the next. But this time there are signs that there will be, especially in the cost department.

I realize that A) its somewhat a matter of personal opinion when to upgrade and B) there is no guarantee that the 2018 phone will be any cheaper, and C) I may not be able to actually get an iPhone 8 this year because of supply, but I am interested in how others view this and if they would wait or buy?

What's your personal criteria for buying a new phone? And what limits do you set for yourself as far as price or model? A large reason I'm sitting on the fence is my wife has an iPhone 5, which won't be upgradable to IOS 11. I plan on getting her a new phone regardless of what I decide to do because of the age and problems she is having. I don't know if I can justify 2 phones.

Are we sure it’s going to be $1000+? Admittedly I have t followed this as much as in the past but I’ve heard very few credible rumors about price. Wouldn’t necessarily be out of the question.

Anyway my upgrade will hinge on what T-Mobile decides to do. They’ve done free upgrades with trade in of a two generation old or newer phone the last two years. If they do something like that with a $200 or so deposit (or better), I’ll bite. But I’m certainly not looking to dump $1k into a phone. Not when it’s 100% want versus need.

If I'm having issues with my older device (battery, mechanical or performance), then that's a guaranteed upgrade. Otherwise, pretty much if there are new features on the device that I like and it's offered at a price that I'm willing to pay. Our max annual household budget for cellphones is $1,500. That said, I don't think I'd be willing to spend that much on just a single iPhone.

Lol, that's one of the reasons I used to upgrade yearly on the family plan with 2-year contracts. We have staggered upgrades so I get the latest phone, my 1-year old phone gets handed down and the 2-year old phone gets traded in, given away or kept as a backup.

We don't do that now but I'm also saving $80/mo on the cellphone bill.

She wants to get a new phone and as I have had a new model since she has I feel it is her turn. There are features on the next iPhone that I am interested in, mostly the photography aspects and thats why I'm caught. I haven't talked to her about price, and she may feel that the iPhone 8 is too expensive and opt for the 7s herself, but I want that to be her decision so I am not talking about prices with her, just features.

In the past when we have paid off a phone I used to redo our cell phone contract- actually, at first, I had to switch providers to be able to get new terms but now you can just change plans- which would be cheaper because our phones were paid off. I put the difference into a bank account. I was able to buy the 6 I currently have mostly with the money we put away. I have had 3+ years of no payments on either phone, but with the expected price increase for the next phone I don't have enough to outright buy even 1 iPhone 8, although I am at least 70% of the way there. On top of the phone, however I know that I will need peripherals- new car chargers, probably new home and travel charging equipment, phone cases, and AppleCare. I got very badly burned on Verizon's phone repair plan and have had mostly good dealings with AppleCare so I will be buying that as well. Buying all that for 2 phones makes an expensive phone ridiculous.

I think the 7S will be incredibly popular, but I do agree, it should vary on price point and storage tiers.

I don't know that I've seen speculation on what the 7s will cost, but I haven't looked that hard either. To be honest I don't know what the 7 went for this year, as I had no plans on upgrading to it. The last 's' model that I bought was my first iPhone, the 4s. My guess is list of $700 and up, depending on memory. Since I see lots of Buy One Get One offers right now it may have come down, or cell providers are trying to get you to switch to their service by eating the cost of the phone.

I usually buy near the top end if I can afford it, for reasons I put in my opening post, so I hadn't looked for 7s pricing. If reality says I don't buy one this year so be it. Regardless, I intend on buying my wife either the 7s or 8.

It probably depends on how you use your phone and if you feel that the 8 is a substantial improvement (for you). If your current phone is doing all you need it for and you don't think 8's improvements are worth a grand, skip the purchase. If you think the 8 will deliver you a vastly better experience, and you can fit it into the budget, buy it. Personally, I don't need anything the 7 or 8 offer, so I can just wait, but I also don't use my phone heavily at all.
