iPhone 8/Plus iPhone 8 plus screen scratches

Hello guys, how are you?


So I purchased my phone exactly a week ago today on launch day, and I’ve noticed that this phone has 1 major problem, screen scratching.

I’ve had my iPhone SE without a case/screen protector for over a year, and it never had scratches on its screen. I’ve even dropped the iPhone as a ton of times and it had no scratches on the screen itself.

My iPhone 8 plus though, has had a TON of scratches ALL over the display even before I’ve dropped it the first and only time. There are scratches running across the display and swirl scratches all over it, but the aluminum rimming is in mint condition.

I now know this iPhone needs a screen protector because it is VERY vulnerable to scratches as oppose to the SE. I thought this display was supposed to be more scratch resistant compared to my old phone, but it’s not in my situation.


I have to exchange this phone anyways, due to the fact that it sounds like crackling noise when I make phone calls (the common issue that a lot of people are facing with) so I will buy a protector on the new iphone .


But is anyone else noticing this too? I’m going to post a pic of my iPhone 8 plus screen and then my SE screen.

Typically the scratches are going to a function of how you use your phone, the environments that it is exposed to, and how you carry it.

Anything harder than the glass on the Mohs scale, including debris in your pockets, WILL scratch the glass. For what it is worth, most of the scratching that people see is in the oleophobic coating (fingerprint resistant) on top of the glass, which is considerably softer than the glass, and is not an actual scratch on the glass.

If it really bothers that badly, take it in and see what the store can do for you.

In regards to the speaker static and crackling that you're hearing, the upcoming 11.1 update should resolve those issues, and there are multiple reports on this forum from beta users who confirm that the static and crackling noises are resolved in the upcoming release.

I have not had any on my phone. I exchanged my 64GB for a 256GB last night and got a screen protector on it today. When cleaning the screen, I did not notice any sort of scratches. But yeah I am OCD.
 
I feel the iPhone displays are fairly durable, but even in the right light, you can see micro scratches that really are Inevitable just from cleaning it. And even a microfiber cloths can scratch the display if it has debris in it.

Do they charge a restocking fee for this? I'm considering wanting to do the same.

Thanks I'll try and see what they say. Sorry to derail the thread ;) On topic, I had my 8 Plus naked for a week before the case and screen protector came in and didn't get any scratches. I'd love to keep it naked but I don't trust myself.

It’s a case by case basis for the most part.

Apple doesn’t charge, and sometimes the stores won’t either; particularly if you’re exchanging for another model.

These are the usual micro scratches that even you new phone will accumulate. As far as the crackling noise, there is an update to fix that. Trade it in and enjoy the lottery.
 
I actually have the exact same issue and feel the same way. The scratches are light but long. I’ve babied it compared to my 7 Plus.
 
Most scratches are just bad luck. Unless you’re going out of your to abuse your phone, you just came across the perfect circumstances needed for a scratch.

Some people get scratches in 24 hours, some never get them in 24 months.

Roll the dice or get a screen protector.

Personally, I’ll go with a screen protector.

It’s not even just like a few scratches, they are pretty bad.


I’m not sure if the coating on the glass wasn’t good which made it scratch unlike the SE

But I never had stuff in the same pocket as oppose to the SE (keys, change, ear pods, etc), so I would of thought that it would of been superb. I’m not sure how this could of even of scratches to begin with... I only dropped it on hardwood floor that is always cleaned from a table hight.
 
I think I know why, because like you I didn’t really have any scratches until the iPhone 6. It’s because the screen is so much bigger, there’s a higher chance it rubs against some hard material and scratches. The smaller phones have a smaller surface area to scratch as well.
 
I’ve got a few small ones on mine and will be switching mine out when they have new. Apple Watch has some too.
 
Are they scratches in the screen, or the coating? This is why I put a screen protector on the second I take it out of the box. I've actually grown to prefer a tempered screen protector than just the naked screen. Having a screen protector might not be the route some may pick, but I figure its better to have a screen protector than risking a rainbow scratch.

I picked up my 8 plus on 22nd on the 23rd I flew out to Orlando for a week, returning today (jet lag sucks btw). I've gone without a screen protector for the first time ever. I've had my phone in and out of pockets and bags 100's of times whilst visiting the parks, and I have no scratches, not even micro ones.
 
  1. It’s in the screen and I keep my phone on a micro fiber sock and the apple silicone case. Two scratches aren’t the case coenrestoinlikelyanyrhing got to it. I check these when I open them and there it was day one.
