I picked up my 8 plus on 22nd on the 23rd I flew out to Orlando for a week, returning today (jet lag sucks btw). I've gone without a screen protector for the first time ever. I've had my phone in and out of pockets and bags 100's of times whilst visiting the parks, and I have no scratches, not even micro ones.

It varies. I’ve gone without a screen protector for an entire year and never had any scratches.

Then on one day just get a random scratch.

It’s not even just like a few scratches, they are pretty bad.

I’m not sure if the coating on the glass wasn’t good which made it scratch unlike the SE

But I never had stuff in the same pocket as oppose to the SE (keys, change, ear pods, etc), so I would of thought that it would of been superb. I’m not sure how this could of even of scratches to begin with... I only dropped it on hardwood floor that is always cleaned from a table hight.

Uh. Well. There you go then!

Lot of people complaining about this....I have a 7 Plus and never got scratches on the front glass. Naked too and it's perfect.

I am convinced that some iPhones scratch way more easily than others (of the same model). I had one a few years ago that was awful... All of my others have been fine. I think there can be an issue with the coating they put on it not curing properly, which leaves it very soft and prone to scratching. Good luck getting it exchanged though - they will probably just tell you that you should take better care of it or put a protector on it (like most of the people in this thread).

No scratches on mine.

I also invested in a $20 glass screen protector (that you can't even tell is on the phone) with a lifetime guarantee.

If I scratch it... I get a free replacement for $5.

Win win.

Amazes me how many people drop $1000 on a phone and then go cheese mode when it comes to protecting it with a screen protector or a case.

Truly amazing. Maybe one day Apple will stop accepting these returns and people will make better decisions.

Hello guys, how are you?

So I purchased my phone exactly a week ago today on launch day, and I’ve noticed that this phone has 1 major problem, screen scratching.

I’ve had my iPhone SE without a case/screen protector for over a year, and it never had scratches on its screen. I’ve even dropped the iPhone as a ton of times and it had no scratches on the screen itself.

_

My iPhone 8 plus though, has had a TON of scratches ALL over the display even before I’ve dropped it the first and only time. There are scratches running across the display and swirl scratches all over it, but the aluminum rimming is in mint condition.

I now know this iPhone needs a screen protector because it is VERY vulnerable to scratches as oppose to the SE. I thought this display was supposed to be more scratch resistant compared to my old phone, but it’s not in my situation.

I have to exchange this phone anyways, due to the fact that it sounds like crackling noise when I make phone calls (the common issue that a lot of people are facing with) so I will buy a protector on the new iphone .

But is anyone else noticing this too? I’m going to post a pic of my iPhone 8 plus screen and then my SE screen.

Yes, I had an iPhone 6 Plus for two years, no scratching (other than very minor micro scratches), carried in my purse, no issues. Got the iPhone 8 Plus -- received two major scratches and one longer very thin one after just a few days. Of course I have a screen protector on now, but was amazed at how quickly it scratched -- it almost looks like it got pressed down hard on a earring or an object. No idea what it could have been -- this screen is definitely not as scratch resistant as my iPhone 6 Plus. I've been hearing a lot issues about the screens and glass for the iPhone 8 series.

Odd we aren't the only ones.

I also never use a case. I don't have any scratches on my display. Sometimes is just dependent on how someone takes care of their phone.

Off topic, but what phone do you have now and are you using it naked?
I have checked my 8+ and under regular light, be it indoors or out doors and there are no scratches to be seen under any angle. It can be said that screen is in perfect condition. Then, I decided to take a my 1100 lumen flashlight (you can fry eggs on it) and shine it at the screen. Well, micro scratches are there - they can e seen with powerful lights. I assume they are coating scratches since they cannot be in normal conditions in normal light. Since I prefer my phones without screen protectors I will follow my own SOP. Go without screen protector for as long as I can, then if I get a scratch on the screen, only then I will apply screen protector. Protector will make scratch disappear.

My iphone 8+ just developed another deep long scratch and many more tiny ones. Haven’t put anything else in that pocket. Also my pockets are from mostly soft material and are clean.

Possibly some iPhone 8 glasses are defective? This makes no sense for glass to scratch this easily....

Once again, my SE glass has no scratches whatsoever and I’ve had it for over a year..... something is out off the ordinary

Only reason I can think of is that Gorilla Glass 5 is being used. Being more shatter proof removes some scratch resistance.

All the 8 and 8+ use the same glass. Do not think Apple just dropped the ball on your device. Only takes a single grain of sand to scratch your screen. Have had my 8+ since the 1st day of introduction and it does not have any scratches.

I suggest you get a screen saver. I hate them and will not use them but it might be best for you.

Bigger screen is going to scratch more then the SE, also just the act of putting in your pockets could scratch the coating, which is what you have shown so far. Gorilla Glass 5 is more durable for falls, but appears to be less durable for scratches.

I'm in the exact same boat! Another scratch to mine.

I'm wondering if the glass is defective. This phone has a case, and I've babied it more than my 7 Plus, which after a year of usage, had no screen scratches.

When I bought my Watch last year, within 24-48 hours there was a scratch in the bottom right corner! I was SO annoyed with myself.

I didn't take my 8 Plus outdoors or put it in my handbag until I had a case and screen protector on it. My 6s Plus had way too many micro scratches on it.

Always wondered, why don’t people put a screen saver on it? If they value their expensive smart phone they would. That’s what I’ve done and it’s no biggie, nor expensive, and doesn’t take away the feel in my opinion.

My 7+ has a few micro scratches that can only be seen when you angle the phone the right way in the right light. Can't be seen when using the phone, so not annoying in that sense, but annoying they are there at all as I look after it very well. I can only think I've had some sand or other grit in a pocket where I've had the phone, or possibly in the micro fibre cloth I clean it with.

I've since picked up a Nuglass tempered glass protector to make sure it gets no more scratches before I sell it to get an X. The only annoying thing is these protectors are only as wide as the screen, so you have to be exact when fitting or they become annoying themselves. There's plenty of room before the curve in the front glass starts, the protectors could easily be made slightly wider and still fit fine.
