Went to the lake. A friend of mine was able to get it from the bottom. I can’t dive to 13 or so feet with the pressure.

We were able to retrieve it. It is drying out but I can clearly tell water is inside. I don’t expect it to function though a week or so of drying out may potentially allow it to charge and then I might be able to grab a back up from it as well as photos and videos that are not in photo stream.

Even if it doesn’t work I am hoping to head to Apple with it and get a replacement for $399 - which thanks to the poster above was the info that made us give retrieving it a shot - since that is about half the price.

I had debated getting her AppleCare+ but I think that would have meant a cheaper replacement. Not sure why I didn’t as she keeps her devices longer than I do.

It was only purchased in late April and is a Red iPhone 8 Plus.

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll update in a week or two if the data is retrievable.
Would you do us all a favor and pull the SIM card tray and hold a flash in the phone and see if the little sticker is pink or white?

Phone recovered.
Screen cracked from water pressure.
SIM card wet. Wiping it down would still make it wet next time taken out. Too much water in there.
Water under front and rear cameras.
Water oozing from sides which separated and out of cracks.
8+ days (it is an iPhone 8 Plus ) and it would not begin to charge or turn on.

Took it to Apple store. They replaced it for $399. Hadn’t purchased AppleCare Plus unfortunately otherwise it would have been $99 (plus the $149 paid for AppleCare). When I held the replacement and the dead phone, you could feel the weight of the water as the dead phone was heavier.

Due to the amount of time it was down there, the pressure cracking the screen at that depth/duration, the water obviously penetrated and waterlogged the phone.

Plenty of videos of iPhone 7s and 8s underwater at 10-15 ft. However those tests are typically 30 min or so. This was 96 hours. However, without retrieving it, I couldn’t have replaced it for $400 (plus the cost of renting scuba gear).

96 hours is a long time for a phone to be submerged under the water, even 30 minutes is significant, but at least you were able to retrieve it from your friend. Thanks for the update.
