That is not correct. It's 2688x1242 actually. See below:

You can think of the XR screen as identical to the XS Max screen, just shrunk slightly.

In fact, we've been discussing in the other thread how the XR actually has the exact same screen real estate as the Max, just shrunk. Meaning, Apple has spec'd both screens to have 414x896 points.

The difference is that the XR multiplies that x 2 to get 828x1792 whereas the Max multiplies that x 3 to get 1242x2688.

@Supermallet, you were probably thinking of the 8 Plus screen, which is first rendered at 2208x1242 before it's downsampled to 1920x1080. See diagram above. That represents 414x736 points, multiplied x 3. You'll also note that 414 number is the same as with both the Max and the XR, meaning the amount of information that can be displayed width-wise is exactly the same for all three models (Plus, XR, Max).

So what’s the exact aspect ratio on the XR?

Exactly the same as the Max. 19.5:9 = 2.167:1.

Or if you go by the pixel count it is 2.164:1.

Well, it's the aspect ratio of the #1 smartphone in the world. ;)

But otherwise not. It's closer to the 21:9 aspect ratio of many movies though.

Nice, definitely enjoy that w/ smaller bezels than my iPhone 8+. XRs can't go on sale soon enough.

So based on this I’m assuming that the Xr with the 6.1 and the notch actually displays less than the 5.5 while playing video?

If so makes me a little bit happier I paid for the max.

Yes. For 16:9 video, the image size on the 6.1" XR is smaller than the 5.5" Plus.

By my calculations, the 6.1" XR has a 16:9 screen size of 74.9 cm2.
For the 5.5" Plus it's 83.4 cm2 (+11%).
For the 6.5" Max it's 85.1 cm2 (+14%).

For 21:9 movies though, the Max would be biggest, with the XR in second place, and the Plus last.

For me on the phone I'd watch more 16:9 stuff, so that's one drawback for me for going with an XR.

EugW: I was not aware that the 8+ was rendered at 1228 and then downsampled. I find that interesting. I am assuming that that’s not that case for 1080p video, though? It wouldn’t make much sense to upsample, rasterize, then downsample video that’s already at the screen’s native resolution. Do you know if this assumption is correct?

If so, then on the 8+ the homescreen, icons, text, etc. are all downsampled after initial rasterization, while 16:9 HD video is initially rasterized at the screen’s native resolution; but on the Max it will be just the opposite: most content will be rasterized at the screen’s native resolution, but 16:9 HD video will have to be upsampled before rasterization.
