^^ No affiliation, but I did order a spare SE, because at that price, why not? Will give it to my 6-year old to use as an iPod Touch, eventually.

Save that extra $100 you would have spent on a 7th gen Touch for when a cheap device comes out in a few years with an A13 or similar.
I checked that site and found no SE listed.

Obviously it's totally up to you but me personally speaking, i would never give an expensive iPhone 8 to a 8 year old kid. Does he need his own phone? You'll likely need a spare SIM card aswell. I understand that you consider this because 32 GB isn't enough storage but the iPhone 8 64 GB retails for 599$ at Apple. So the iPod touch seems just perfect, everything's over Wi-Fi and with iOS 12 you can use features like Screen-Time and other stuff. I would look into the 128 GB iPod touch 7th gen, but thats a 100$ more over the 32 GB one.

Or if you want to save - some resellers still sell 64 GB 6th gen iPod touches that Apple used to sell from 2015 to 2017 i believe (they had 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB models at launch and later killed both 16 and 64 GB), they should be a bit cheaper as a new 7th gen. However note that the 6th gen is not able to support iOS 13 when it releases.

Actually, he’s not getting either one. I wound up upgrading his 6th gen iPad to an Air 3 instead. They use their iPads for games, and for home schooling, so I just thought that would be more practical overall.

He’s super happy with it!

Probably a safer bet. Even in schools today, they’re issuing iPads for students to use for education. Plus, having a larger display allows for a lot more interaction with various applications. The real advantage to the iPod, simply would just be the portability in the pocket to be honest.
