I use both devices frequently. While I do like the infinite tweaking you can do with Android, I find it very much like tweaking Windows registry settings....you can rapidly end up with unintended consequences. For example, I've twice now managed to break my S-pen auto launch by fiddling with text notification widgets. I was able to recover both times but found that the widgets had went into the bowels of settings and turned something off that I had to manually re-enable. Poor app implementation seems to be far more the norm than the exception in the Google Play store.

Of course I either take what Apple gives me or not, but at least what they do give me they ensure works adequately.

It's a tradeoff....either accept stable but fixed functionality or adapt to limitless capabilities but with you as sysop. If you've got the time and willingness to fiddle Android is a far more capable OS and, if you really crave a 4 - app phone, you can even customize it down to something even simpler than iOS.

With iOS it's always WYSIWYG. But for some very large percentage of the population, that's all they want. Fiddling with your phone is for "kids."

I've been using the Galaxy Nexus for the last 2 years.

Loved Android. Didn't use widgets. They didn't appeal to me at all. The whole experience was great.

With that being said. I'm getting an iPhone 5S for my upgrade. Thought long and hard about getting the Note 3, but after playing with it numerous times - it's not the phone for me. Don't like touchwiz. Don't like the big fisher price looking icons. The screen is beautiful, but the UI is horrible visually, and all the spen stuff makes it too busy for my tastes.

Love having a big screen. But, I miss the IOS experience more. Even though I jailbroke my iPhones, I never had as many freezes/crashes as I had on Android. I rooted and rom'd my Nexus since day one. Loved the ability to do what I wanted with my phone.

My household is Apple centric so it will be nice to integrate seamlessly once again with the wife and daughter. I'm going to miss the heavy Google integration that Android affords - especially Google Voice. But, all the other Google products mesh well with IOS.

Very interesting feedback, guys. I am considering whether the pros of customizability will entice me to leave the walled garden. And you've provided some good food for thought.

I was frankly a little surprised by the lopsided pro android vote totals until I saw that the thread was moved to alternaTives to iOS. I think I originally posted in the ios area. The change skewed the results I think.

Here's the thing: the average consumer has no idea what the heck the difference is. They just know android or apple.

No... most people don't know "android" at all, or they heard the word but don't really know what it is. Most don't know "iOS" either.
All non-techy people I know just refer the model (like S4) or the manufacturer.

At least that's my experience.

I've had an array on top tier Android phones (Droid Incredible, S3, S4, HTC One) as well as the iPhone since 1st installment. I prefer iOS for phone and Android for tablet. Unfortunately i'm stuck within the iOS ecosystem due to one particular app that I use quite a bit in aviation not because I don't like android.

My first iOS experience was on my iPod touch 4th gen, fast forward a year later and I got my 4S (my first smartphone), fast forward two years later I got my 5S. And right after my 5S I was introduced to android via my Nexus 7 (2013). I never fancied android on my phone but I prefer android on a tablet versus iOS. I think I prefer android on a tablet because android feels better on a larger tablet sized screen. Lots of customization and bells and whistles is nice on a large screen. I like my phone with iOS because it's straight forward.

I could see myself getting an android phone. I had my eye on the G2 before I got my 5S. We will see what is out when I'm available to upgrade again.

iPhone to Android. Love it.

Not sure what people are installing on their phones but I've never had any issues of lag. Coming from a jail broken iPhone (will not use stock), Android had been a lot smoother.

I've switched a few times.

First I switched from iPhone to android (mid range) and hated it. Yes android does more, but that phone just sucked.

Then I switched back to iPhone and loved it

Then I switched from iPhone to the galaxy s III and I love it. It's a huge step forward from what iPhone offers. I hated it at first because I was so used to the iPhone way of doing things, but once I looked at it more open minded I couldn't go back

I switched back to an iphone5 for a week and the user experience was just horrible! It's sad how behind the times iPhones have become and apple - even after ios7 - stoll hasn't caught up yet.

Now I have my eyes on the best phone available so far - the note 3

choice is the simplest answer. and iphone users cannot comment at all on that feature of android phones.

for the life of me, i cannot figure out why apple has not offered another screen size. think about it. what would happen if apple only sold a 15" laptop or 20" imac?

choice!

iPhone to Android - meh.

My first Android phone was the AT&T HTC One X and it was an awesome upgrade from my iPhone 4S for the most part. Loved it.

Now I have an HTC One X+ after losing the One X somewhere, thing gets hot and lags like crazy sometimes. Makes a good hand warmer though. Hate it, would go buy a new one but I don't want to turn into one of those weirdos that buys a new phone every month because of some flaw lol.

So meh overall, my next phone will be an Android one despite the mixed experience just because that's where the large screen sizes are. Curse you Apple and your hate for big screens

iOS - > Android switcher

Hated it at first. Love it NOW.

I've become addicted downloading HD movies using MovieTube & TubeMate.

My next Android phone needs expandable memory up to 64 GB. My HTC One at 25 GB avail is getting filled up now. I need a 64 GB card to fill up at least 30-40 720p movies.

I love Android's freedom.

Maybe this is why typing on the iPhone is still so subpar (compounded by the multi-year old keyboard software):

Apple iPhone 5s and 5c touchscreen test shows surprising inaccuracies, Samsung Galaxy S III way more accurate

I've BEEN saying this!

The iPhone keyboard SUCKS dye to it being so tiny.

I hated typing on my Galaxy Nexus.

I was way more prone to hit something incorrectly than I ever was on IOS.

That's the OLD stock android keyboard, not a galaxy s or galaxy Note keyboard.

Big difference

Iphone to Android...LOVE IT. I'll never go back unless Apple stops playing catch up with the iPhone and blows past Android

Last summer, I had to sign in for a new contract with a mobile company so I bought a new phone since they pay half for a new contract. I went from a 4S to the Galaxy S4 and I wasn't too sure at first and I had either 2 weeks or 30 minutes of air time, whichever came first, to give it back, so just like a *********** I gave it back and got a iPhone 5 instead, a few weeks before iOS7.

Man! Do I regret my choice now! I bought my son a Note 3 the day it came out, it is so awesome, the screen size is just amazing! My first smart phone was the iPhone 4 and I had iPhones since then so before now I had no idea how different it is to have the freedom that Android gives its users compared to IOS. And, I can write it down since no one here knows where my car is parked, I just hate iOS 7 on my phone. There I said it.

And, all of our TVs are Samsung, so using the Note 3 with them is pretty cool!

So, Android

I might go back to iPhone in 2015 once my next upgrade is due, but not to switch to iOS but to sell it. I like that iPhones lack any carrier branding and bloatware and have great resell value. I would sell the iPhone 6s in 2015 and get another unlocked Android with no carrier bloatware.

I like iPhones more for leisure. Some gaming, some music while working out since it is small, and a decent camera for some photo shooting. But I like Android more for productivity. I cant see myself going back to a screen smaller than 4.7-5 inches. I like my texting, web browsing, and viewing content better on a bigger screen.

Went from Android to iPhone, back to Android and i'm going back to iPhone once again. I think i would have stayed with android if it wasn't for my Galaxy Nexus. I really like android but i need a stable and reliable phone everyday and a battery that can actually last me a day and not a few hours
