Now that I got all 6 of my email addresses to push to my iPhone, the only things I miss from BB are BBM and the BB button. We can use whatsapp or pmessenger, but until Apple creates a stock chat program thats built into every iphone, nothing will be the same as BBM.

And Apple is smart enough (actually ATT) to not let that happen because then everyone will dump their $20 unlimited text plans.

The current closest apps to the BBM that I've found and used are: PingChat 2 and WhatsApp. The PingChat 2 is good for people that like the whole needing a PIN/username concept. The WhatsApp is a notch better with seamless integration with the contacts' numbers in the phone. Having both, I personally, like WhatsApp a little better due to the cleaner interface and customization options.

apple don't need to make a stock chat app, since there are many multi protocol messenger apps out there, people can just use their existing im logins....

Whatsapp all the way.... Now my BB friends have all installed it on there phones... free messaging and also my family abroad all seem to have it now, so free international instant messaging......
Cant complain about that... plus the app is only 59 pence....

See, just reading this thread makes me realize why I love BBM and the fact that it is one program, across all Blackberries.

Some people have mentioned Beejive or eBuddy but that requires your contacts to be signed into something like AIM/MSN/Yahoo, etc. Too many chats.

Also people can't agree on whats the best chat app, PingChat 2, WhatsApp, pMessenger.

Too much choice, my friends may not have all. Some may have one, some the other then I have to be logged into Beejive, get WhatsApp, pMessenger.

WhatsApp is behind because I just got it and my friend had it 2 years ago with his 3G and now has a BB, but he still came onto my favourites because he was in my contact list. Pretty useless since he doesnt even have WhatsApp.

With BBM, its just BBM... all BB users have it, its on, you can message easily and know they have it.

I would love it if they came up with something like BBM for the iPhone, something like iChat, or something that worked across iPhone, BBM, and Android. A universal app. But even just an iChat that mimicks BBM would do because I know many people who would switch over for it.

For now, I pay $15 for BBM, and then my regular phone will be the iPhone 4. That is how important BBM is for me.

I know people will jump and say BBM is like texting, but for me its way better because my dad lives abroad, brothers, sisters, cousins and they all have BBM. It is just much easier way to communicate. Also my friends all have BBs. I think you just need to experience it and have the people to chat with to truly know whats the difference.

It is personal preference and this is just how I see it and my personal opinion.

iPhone cannot do that because RIM (Research in Motion, the maker of BlackBerry) owns the patent.

how is that too many chats? they don't have to have an account on each thing, like i said, my mates on blackberries and androids go for their own multi-protocol app, like trillian or ebuddy, i had ebuddy on my iphone, but bought beejive, i sign into that with msn on it and facebook chat, then they sign in with whatever they are on, simples. some have yahoo, but you can add yahoo accounts to msn and vice versa so really i only use the 1 login, they use whatever they want. they stay logged in their end and i stay logged in mine and its just like texting, but over the data network. much better than BBM since its not a closed network....

I wouldn't mind it as long as it doesn't have that stupid "delivered changes to read" thing that BBM has. I swear people get overly emotional if you read their message and don't reply quickly. That was the most annoying part of BBM when I had a Blackberry. I eventually deleted it.

pMessenger uses a PIN the same as BBM so you don't have to give out your number (the pins even look like BBM pins) it also tells you when a message has been sent, delivered and received same as BBM with D, R letters beside the message. Also can use emoticons and customize backgrounds. I don't know why more people aren't looking at this it's great. I have used WhatsApp, PingChat2 and I find pMessenger is the best.

BBM is a proprietary chat protocol that only works between Blackberry devices. It is tied to each Blackberry's unique PIN. I loved it when I had a Blackberry and wanted to communicate with my other friends and coworkers with Blackberries. There are some nice aspects to BBM:

  • No login required
  • PING function that causes the receiving Blackberry to ring AND vibrate to get someone's attention
  • Delivery confirmations
  • BBM will resume sending a message when in a low signal area, unlike SMS which will just fail
  • You won't be bombarded by messages from your AIM/Yahoo/MSN buddies
The only negative I can see to BBM is that it only works with Blackberries. To message anyone else would require SMS or an AIM/MSN/Yahoo type instant messaging application. For an office where everyone is on Blackberry, the BBM is an excellent closed solution. If you need to chat with largely non-berry users, BBM is pretty much useless.

Ya thx we know what BBM is we are looking for something that works 'like' it on the iPhone.

pMessenger

The only problem is getting ur Blackberry and android friends to download the app and actually using it

Am I the only one that has like 40 friends mostly on Google Talk?

Using Trillian, Ebuddy or IM+ chatting with anyone for a few minutes drops my battery life 10% per 5 minutes of talk, not cool.

I used to have a Blackberry and Google Talk client on there would be signed on for days without draining the battery? WTF?
