you're missing the point entirely.

His perspective is the only one that counts.

And since he could do it on his Treo, obviously it invalidates the experiences of people who like their iPhones just fine.

Well, yea. I have a knack for missing the obvious, at times... ;)

"kids" comment was sort of a "button" for me (as you could tell). Having been in high-tech for decades, I'm far from being unaware of the "world" outside Apple. I usually don't bother with replying to posts that get personal. Ah well, guess it's tired and I'm late.

And if you read my post it wasn't directed to you.

Are you honestly telling me that you found this an elegantly designed telephone interface? or that it is as quick and convenient as the mono-purpose clamshell phones?

If you are someone who answers calls and makes them all day long -- are you really telling me that this phone won't get on your nerves?

honestly? After the sexy aura wears off?

Usability's a funny thing. It can't be distilled down to the number of button presses (at least not entirely).

6 'operations' can be quicker than 4 if those 6 are located more consistently and predictably.

Let me compare to my current regular phone, a Sony Ericsson K750i (on which I have 148 contacts)

1. Press *
2. Press Unlock
3. Press Down on the thumbstick to show address book

4. Either navigate with joystick (hold to scroll, then locate the contact to dial using a number of joystick inputs to find the exact entry) - OR - begin typing the person's surname (non-T9 input) to jump to them.

5. If their default number is the one I want to dial, press Call
6. If their default number is not the one I want, use Joystick-Left or -Right to move between the contact's numbers and press Call.

Now, the iPhone features Favourites. Plus, the inertial scrolling and large screen means the generic action of scrolling through a list of names is likely to be speedy and accurate. If your Favourites and Contacts lists are relatively static, a combination of the 'jump to name' index and muscle-memory combined with the inertial scrolling would make finding a name very quick.

So, again, you cannot distill usability into a series of keypresses or operations. More important is how natural do those operations feel to the user? How much thought is required to perform them?

Kids.. Really?

Lol.

Apple users are truly kids when it comes to technology.

lol

I thought this was such an odd statement.. as if we've only been around a couple of years of so..

Are we really going to let this one go :)

Lets inform our guest!

• Apple introduces the first Personal Computer! (yes I'm serious)
•*Apple: first to introduce the GUI on a PC (1983); Apple introduces the Mouse.
(can you imagine.. the Mouse.. something we totally take for granted! -thanks Apple)

• First All-in-one design 1984 Macintosh - introduced the 1st Mac OS GUI

Bill Gates, the most famous and richest pirate of our time:
"In anticipation of the Macintosh launch, Bill Gates, co-founder and chairman of Microsoft, was given several Macintosh prototypes in 1983 to develop software. While the company was indeed ready with its BASIC and the MultiPlan spreadsheet at the Macintosh's launch, in 1985 Microsoft launched Windows, its own GUI for IBM PCs."
(All from ideas & technology taken from Apple) *Rip-off*Cough*

• First cheap (Home Based) laser-printers in 1984-85.
• *In 1993 Apple introduces a new computing platform.. the PDA! (which had the first handwriting recognition software)
Ahead of its time.. Palm being the first beneficiary of the new platform.
• In 1994 Apple brands one of the first consumer Digital Cameras.
• 1998 Original Macintosh Re-birth in the All-in-one design; introduces iMac (in Colors) brings new life to the PC world.
• *Pushes new interface standards with USB; eliminating ps/2 devices.
• *Invents, Introduces and Brands the Firewire interface.
• breaks design barriers with the Cube, Mac mini & 1" (total) Powerbooks: the first ultra-thin, fully featured notebooks.
• First PC company to eliminate CRT displays
• First to the market with 802.11 (WiFi Networks); ahead of PC makers by a couple of years.
• Introduces the infamous iPod in 2001
• Creates new market for music (iTunes)
• *Unleashes NeXT OS/ Mac OS X in 2001 (in original form still better than the windows platform); and puts the Mac OS light-years ahead of Windows (Remember in 2001 Windows had ME; Mac had OS X vs.1)
• 1st Retail Channel stores
• *2007 introduces revolutionary portable computer.. and phone, the iPhone

I'm sure I'm missing a ton of little things as well.. but its a pretty good list, don't you think! I really could have stopped at "Mouse" and been pretty much ok!

What all PC'ers should really say is.. "thank you Apple for being such a badass.." and paving the way for other companies to benefit from your brave (and sometimes stupid) revolutionary-ahead-of-its-time thinking, so that I can get my stuff cheaper and in more choices than ever before possible.

But I guess that's why their motto is "Think Different"!

Thanks.

QuickTime
TrueType (Outline Fonts)
Excel - 1st ran on Fat Macs (512K)
Word - on the Mac for 4 years before Windows release
Several fastest notebooks at the time of their release: Powerbook G3 Series 292MHz, PowerBook G4 500MHz.

Oh, how about zero configuration networking over LocalTalk using AppleTalk. Which worked on the original Mac 1984. Many a small company setup their own networks virtually plug-play.

I'm out of being awake time now. But, thanks for the fun list. Some I had forgotten.

I have never seen a product with such devoted critics.

I have never seen a product get so much acclaim as the iPhone has throughout the media....very few places/sites had bad things to say about it.

Seems the complaints are far smaller then the compliments but people get so angry when they see anything not 100% Pro-iPhone.

Yes, that is what we are saying.:) Honestly!

When I tried out the iPhone, I immediately noticed that if I used this phone for long I'd get mad at it since making a phone call is buried under several menus. That's just a bit ridiculous. Say you're in a jam, and you need to call 911 really quick? Can you handle that in a stressful or dangerous situation? Is 911 on the main menu? No. You guys are saying that an iPhone just takes some adjusting to because everything's fluid. Well on my phone I turn it on, flip it open, hold down a key for speed dial or punch in a number and boom I'm calling. Sure it's not an Apple work of art but it works more effectively at making calls.

The OP has been outed on another thread -iPhone First Impressions / Reviews
page 30. He's looking for hits to his blog. Quit taking him seriously and wasting your time & energy responding. This thread should be removed as it's duplicative and a ruse.
Really Mr egadfly/Eric!

That may be true, but some of his points are still valid. By the way, I never considered making the extra effort to visit his blog.

Yes, but why start a new thread to post what you have already posted on another thread in this forum?
