anytime someone uses an iPhone to surf the web, run a web app, watch youtube, check their email, etc. etc. etc. --- they are in essence replacing some of the time they would have spent on their traditional computer with time they are spending on their iPhone.

but i doubt anyone has actually completely replaced their computer with an iphone. i certainly wouldn't.

why would i use my phone when i have my macbook pro readily available? i browse the net when i don't have access to wifi/ethernet or if i'm out and about. the time spent on the phone doesnt REPLACE time i would have spent on my computer, it merely adds to it. i'm not ready to use a 700mhz processor to run photoshop, or drop $300 to use my iphone with a desktop 'dock'.

ironically, if the article is right about the iPhone being a disruptive technology that slips in under the radar until it takes over an entire industry, then your reaction would be expected. of course, that doesn't prove the article is correct, either...just saying.

apple shrinking down your mbp down to the size of an iPhone isn't that hard to imagine. Just look at the leaps they've made with the Nano and MBA.

It's not going to replace traditional computers for power users, but there are plenty of people in the world who are happy as all heck with email, browsing, multimedia, and lightweight apps (iWork and iLife, for example).

Here's the question: if the future of computing isn't this model...what is it? Desktops and Laptops forever? Doubt it.

This model = portable computer that is versatile enough to carry around in your pocket and will expand into a desktop-size machine when you want it to.

This is obviously just a bunch of speculation, but I really am curious to know if anyone has an alternative vision of where things are heading...

macbook air is gimmicky in my opinion... nothing special, and not practical for anyone who isnt constantly in a wireless environment.

garagband is lightwight?! get real.

i dont see anything like this becoming a practical product in the next 5 years.

dare i say integration with an iphone, .mac, and something like the microsoft surface? now we're talking. but even then, i dont see a big touchscreen taking over for a keyboard and mouse. idk about you guys, but i both 1: don't want to stare down at my desk at a tabletop screen or 2: hold my arms out in front of me for two hours mashing my fingers against my computer screen.

Perhaps.

Though I can tell you that I much prefer responding to forums on my laptop. Lack of cut/paste being just one reason. Larger screen, faster keyboard too.

Or perhaps it's extra time spent doing those things.

I would suggest that most of the time spent surfing/tubing on the iPhone is done in places where even a laptop isn't handy. In the bathroom, late at night in bed, laying on a sofa, etc. :D
