I think he just means the new iPhones will have 3.0.1 or something of the like, which will lock the phone again if you update or buy one with that firmware on it.

Yes, you're in luck. No matter what firmware version you have right now, your 3G is unlockable. Just update to 3.0, jailbreak and unlock. :D

Who said that? If your bootloader is from September 2008 (or later), you can't unlock your iPhone 3G as of yet. Bootloader = not the same as baseband.

Wow

This isn't good.......I think my serial number is xx835xxxxxx.....basically im in September. Does anybody have any insight to this situation?:(

MuscleNerd said to buy an iPhone 3G ASAP if you are planning to get one. That is because in a few weeks or so there will be a new firmware version (Probably 3.0.1). New iPhones purchased after the new firmware version will have an updated baseband which means they won't be able to be unlocked. No where in my post did I mention baseband, not sure where you're getting that from.

Neverbepeace, you're fine. Bootloader doesn't matter anymore. No matter what your bootloader is, you can unlock with Yellowsn0w.

I got my iPhone in September 2008 and I unlocked it.

i think they're waiting until 3.0 is officially released, so tomorrow.

That's such good news.
I want to upgrade to 3.0 so bad, but I won't be able to get a 3GS for a few weeks probably.

Now I can update in the meantime anyways, without losing resale value on my 3G!
SWEEET!

This just made the value of my 3G that much more when I put it up on eBay tomorrow.

Well, considering there's probably thousands of other people who will also have newly unlocked phones, the competition will bring the prices down.

has the demo started yet? i just got off of work?? im on twitter, the quik page and dev team blog, whats the deal?

never mind its starting now :-D

So for someone with an 8GB iPhone (not 3G), does this mean I should (and can) unlock my iPhone on 3.0 before selling? I don't want to go through the iTunes downgrading if I don't have to, and I've got a few days before I have to unlock.

friday boys...can't wait. all i even really care about is landscape texting. do you think t-mobile users can MMS?? i have it on my plan.

I have the 3.0 software... will I be able to JAILBREAK my phone so I can unlock it?

Yes. Any iPhone 3G that has been purchased up until now, along with the 3.0 firmware, will be able to be unlocked. It doesn't matter with BB you have it on now, 3.0 will update it entirely and from there, you can jailbreak and unlock it once the dev team has put out it's newest version of pwnage tool or winpwn on friday.

same here!
and even though Edge is crap slow, i still want to be able to tether it with my macbook pro. :D even if it is about 120 kb/s download ^_^ it's better than no internet at least haha
about the MMS on t-mo, i think it's gonna be how it currently stands, picture messages will be sent to your MobileLife albums online. Which is crap but, I sure hope not :/

WilliamG doesn't know what he's talking about. Bootloader doesn't matter when it comes to unlock, just baseband downgrade. For that it has to be 5.08.

You can.

Now this is true. The new 3.0 unlock will work on any baseband/bootloader, according to the new devteam video.
