So my wife had an issue that her iPhone screen would be all white. It would stay like this for hours, then restart itself and it's fine. Everything we set up an appointment at the Genius Bar, it would start working right before we would go. So yesterday it did it, and we got an appointment at the Genius Bar and got it in. The Genius looked at it and said no problem and will replaced the display. I was thinking they would just swap it out, but nope they replaced the display. They did it in about 10-25 minutes and it works perfectly.
I took a picture with my iPhone this time just in case it started working. We were also able to back it up so we were ready if they just replaced it (we would sync it to iTunes in the past when this happened to see if it would fix it).
The funny part is I took screen shots on her phone and when we got the phone back from being fixed, it showed the pics that I took like the screen was working 100%.
Either way we were very pleased at how we were treated and how it was handled.
Here is what the phone looked liked and it would stay like this for hours:

It doesn't make sense, why would they replace the display when it's much simpler to replace the phone with a refurb.

Don't sure, but we didn't care. They said it's so easy to replaced the display on the 3G and 3Gs. Maybe they were out of refubs or something.

Plus it doesn't sound like a display problem, sounds like a software glitch. Perhaps you think they actually fixed the problem, kind of like how the problem cannot be replicated on demand, but in reality you should have swap the phone.

why? her phone is in mint condition and works fine. We had a problem and they fixed it. What more can I ask for?
Like I said, it's simpler to replace the phone than it is to fix it.

Nope, I saw him take it apart and replace it. We also had to buy more anti glare film because he couldn't get it back on the new display. The screen was still in "white mode" at the store and said it was no problem. The paper work even said the display was replaced that we got back from them.

Does the phone still pick up phone calls when the screen is all white? If it does, then perhaps it is the display problem. If not, it sounds like software glitch to me.

Like I said, maybe they were out of refurbs and wanted us to go home happy. but why would I come home, back it up, go back and ask for a refurb?

We didn't try to call the phone, but we would see the phone light up all white a few times and later saw it was text messges coming in. So I texted her and the screen would light up all white.
Why would they put on the paper work "replace screen" tell us they are and did replace the screen and I saw him replace the screen and thats all? He didn't plug the phone into anything either, whouldn't he have to do that if it was a glitch?

Nevermind, you and I are not on the same page and it doesn't sound like we will be.

I agree it's easier to replace the phone and all I am saying maybe they didn't have any on hand. You say it was a glitch and I saw him replace the screen, the paper work says they did that worker signed and I signed. Why would they replace a screen if it was a glitch?
All I am saying i saw what he did and we're very happy with the turn out.
We were expecting a swap out and that's why we backed it up.
I'm not trying to argue here, I'm just saying what happened.
I said before I took a screen shot on her phone and when we did see the picture after it was fixed, we saw her screen on the pic like it is normally, not the white light like it was showing.

Replacing the whole unit is a waste why train someone to replace something if there going to just replace the unit. My 3gs had this issue and was swapped due to a lack of parts the issue was something to do with the display not returning a correct signal to the board causing the White screen. I would have been happy with a screen replacement.

Glad apple came through for you mate.

Thanks! I am too, the guy was very polite and professional. It also pays to make an appointment because yesterday it was packed. It was 60-65 digress out and everyone was out.

I took mine in today to see if there was anything they could do about the dust.
I have all of a sudden seen a tremendous amount dust under the glass.
Outside in the sunlight the display looked like a star chart.
So I made an appointment and took it in and they simply changed the display and glass.
I actually couldn't be happier because the rest of the phone is perfect.

Nope it's just you, your thought process is flawed

why would she want the entire phone replaced if it was in mint condition, and had no other problems besides the faulty screen

she would have to go through the problem of restoring her phone, uploading her music and videos again, etc

Exactly. I was very impressed that they only replaced the screen. It was very quick and like you said, she didn't have to load her stuff back on.

Obviously you have never swap your phone before. Many people on this forum have swapped their 3G or 3GS for refurb more than few times, and many of them including myself find the process much simpler, satisfying and comforting than a "genius" attempting to repair the problem on site.

Apple refurb has been very high quality that most will agree with, and Apple has swap phones for reason as simple as customer request.

Back to my "original" comment, which neither of you seem to understand, "It doesn't make sense, why would they replace the display when it's much simpler to replace the phone with a refurb."

I don't doubt you about refurbs. I have a refurb iPod and it's great and if possible I would like to get my daughter a refurb of the current generation iPod Touch for Christmas if possible.
The screen was the only the only issue and the phone is in perfect condition. And I said before, maybe they were out of refurbs at the store. So instead of us not getting it fixed they replaced the screen, and we left with a fixed iPhone. It was quick and I don't even think we waited 10 minutes for it to get fixed. Either way, refurb iPhone or a replaced screen, we would have been happy with the end result :D

As long as the OP is happy with the result, who cares?

Apple is probably trying to cut down on the number of exchanges for reasons like, "My iPhone looked at me wrong," or "I dropped it and now it won't work, but I'm sure it's not my fault."

Back to what I said earlier, obviously we're not on the same page.

I guess I'll spend the extra time to explain my reasoning.

5 minutes to replace the phone with refurb, which is practically new. 30 minutes to replace the display, which could still have issues relating to other hardware glitch. Without other information, it just doesn't make sense why genius bar would have chose the more time consuming route. They may be out of the refurb units, which is the obvious reason behind their decision.

Going back to the intent of my initial response, which I was simply stating what I thought was unusual, and the response isn't attempting to answer nor ask any question. Kind of like your intent for this thread in the first place, which doesn't really serve any purpose either.

Because it is cheaper to just replace the screen, does that answer your question? My screen has been replaced before due to dust being under the glass. Why would they replace the whole device when they can just replace the problem piece and save the refurbed phones for those that need new phones rather then just a piece thats malfunctioning.

It's a pretty basic thing to understand but maybe you are on some other page as to opposed the logical page that most people try to be on.

i wish theyd have replaced my whole phone since my crappy case scratched the back, but they replaced my screen and it works great (and i have a case so i dont see the back anyway and dont mind really), so im content.

also weirdly enough, the apple guy said that they dont give refurbished phones, only new ones. guess he was just misinformed?

Apple has never shied away from replacing the phone with refurb, and difference of cost have never been the issue, so why would they care now. All I am saying is on a busy day, replacing the display is wasting time whenreplacing the phone takes 1/5 of the time, and the cost really doesn't matter between the two.
